If you're not playing a mage then there isn't a reason for your character to join the mages guild.

What about minor skills that you picked as magic like restoration or destruction etc then it makes sense to him them sorta

If you're like me and like collecting artifacts, join the mages guild because they have some important ones (like Staff of Magnus). I always join all factions, or at least try to.

But if you don't have good skill in any of the magic classes you'll have a hard time levelling up (as you might know there are skill requirements to go up the ranks in a faction).
RP reasons. But other than that no. Nothing wrong with free stuff!

No harm in it if you actually use magic and might need the training

i was mainly talking about faction conflicts, but i guess ill just join them as always.
@baltothethief joining them like any other faction gives you free stuff like restore magika pots, which is good for money and my character is using 1 magic skill (major mysticism) under the sign of the atronach. also free disposition to all mage guild, questline, and access to trainers bc some are guild restricted. even if ur a warrior, at some point you will have money and power to max out all of your magic abilities as well. so yes there are lots of reasons to join every faction possible as long as they dont interfere with something else that you need.

The Mages Guild themselves are not fond of the Telvanni house, but there's nothing stopping you from joining both. From memory if you join Telvanni, the disposition of Mages guild members towards you decreases slightly. But they don't kick you out or anything.

The only 'conflict' as such in the game is between the Fighters Guild and Thieves Guild, and thats because a lot of high-ranking Fighters Guild members are affiliated with a mobster organisation (The Camonna Tong) that are enemies with the Thieves Guild. It is possible to join both and become head of both of these guilds as well, but the quests have to be done a certain way.

Ranking up in both the Mages Guild and Telvanni will effectively *more* than negate the disposition loss you'd have for being a high rank in the other guild.

Yeah once you’ve achieved a significantly high rank either guild (particularly Mages, I don’t think the Telvanni have a problem with the Mages Guild, it’s more the other way around), the Disposition thing doesn’t matter at all.

It’s only really a factor at lower ranks (and even then, it’s uncommon that someone joins Telvanni at a low Mages Guild rank anyway, given the proximity and ease of completing the early Mages Guild quests in Balmora and Ald’ruhn ...).
