The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

OpenMW data files not loading correctly?
I recently downloaded the OpenMW engine and have been trying to run Morrowind in it, and it runs fine, except for one problem: It doesn't seem to be loading the correct addons/data files! I imported the EXACT .ini file from the Steam directory that the game uses when I play the Steam version, but when the game loads, it loads in a completely different texture and mesh pack, with these awful-looking silver shiny rocks all over the place. Let me show you the difference:

This is from the Morrowind Graphics Extender/Steam version: https://imgur.com/UnXGQRB
(That's the way I WANT it to look.)
This is from the OpenMW version as loaded directly from the .ini: https://imgur.com/peg6GA3
(You can see a few of those ugly silver rocks in the background.)

What else are you using with OpenMW? This may be an incompatibility issue.

As far as, like, mods and plugins? It's a pretty extensive list, but it doesn't seem to matter, because even if I just check off the base .esp files (Morrowind base, Tribunal and Bloodmoon), it still loads those awful rocks (and trees which appear to be made out of silver or gold for some reason), as well as some kind of Balmora retexture mod. I'm on Windows 10 with an nVidia 980 GTX an an Intel i7 chipset if that makes a difference.

Forgive me, I should have been more clear. Do you have anything like the Morrowind Code Patch or MGE XE installed with OpenMW? Those two always cause problems with OpenMW, since they change the same things.

I was using the Graphics Extender and the Code Patch with the Steam version, but I don't have them installed with OpenMW. I'm guessing that's why some mods aren't showing properly?

Did you reinstall the game before installing OpenMW?

No I didn't. I just installed OpenMW and loaded in the .ini file from my Steam directory, and clicked play. Is there something else I need to do?

Try doing a full reinstall of the game. That may solve your problem.

OpenMW handles bump-mapped objects differently to MGE. Look for OpenMW conversions of the mods that are shiny in your game, or convert them yourself: https://openmw.readthedocs.io/en/master/reference/modding/texture-modding/convert-bump-mapped-mods.html

When it comes to running mods in OpenMW, you need to add each one to OpenMW's settings, cfg file in your (I'm presuming Windows here) Documents\My Games\OpenMW folder. Beyond that, you can control load order in the OpenMW launcher by dragging the mods around in the list.

More info on running mods in OpenMW here: https://openmw.readthedocs.io/en/master/reference/modding/mod-install.html

So I reinstalled and checked the .cfg file and all my mods are saved to the file properly, and this crap is still happening. I'm getting silver tinfoil rocks and silver and golden trees, and bookcases and beds made out of seemingly pure gold. There is something screwed up with a light map or texture map or something and I can't figure out what. Example:

UPDATE: Problem solved. Here's what I did. After reading up a bit on people with similar problems, someone said to go in and manually delete all the offending meshes that were having "false bump mapping" applied to them. So basically I deleted every tree and rock mesh in the folders, as well as a bed and bookshelf mesh, and a tankard and pitcher mesh. All meshes are showing their correct light maps and bump mapping now.
