Is there a path that lets you join Dagoth? Never could figure that one out, hard as I tried.

Unfortunately not. That would have caused too many lore problems for future games.

indeed, Dagoth Ur being defeated and the Nerevarine dissapearing shortly thereafter is canon

It would have only been a dragon break. Not that big of a deal. It's happened before. And it seems like Bethesda left some references in the game to joining the sixth house, as if they were thinking about adding that path.
