You'll be better in that game as long as you play it often

In the vanila game, in Balmora, in the East Guard Tower top floor, there is a Sword of White Woe on top of a closet. Jump around (or levitate if you can) while staying out of sight of the guard, and it is free. It is an enchanted ebony long sword. Not as nice as Magebane, but easier to get.
I used that for a while, then upgraded to Umbra when I had decent armor.

May i know the stats?

Umbra, two handed long sword, health 6,500, speed 1.35, reach 1.0
damage 10-50, 10-45, 10-40
Cast when used, soultrap for 120 secs on target (on target soultrap is rare)
You get it in a dual with an level 20 Orc wearing a full set of Orcish armor.

Sword of White Woe, one handed Ebony broadsword, health 1,800, speed 1.35, range 1.0, weight 24.
damage 4-26, 2-26, 2-26
Cast when strikes, drain health 1-10 pts for 30 secs
There are a few in game, but the one in Balmora is easiest for a new character to get. Magebane is better, but a lot harder to get. (Maybe get White Woe and use it to help get Magebane.)

(I missed it above, but Umbra is heavy with a weight of 40.)
Goldbrand is also very easy to get and doesn't require much fighting at all, the hardest part being the swim to Boethiah's sunken shrine a bit northwest of Hla Oad. The rest is basically 2000 gold, grab a book from Vivec, and an Orc in Caldera - all easily fast traveled to. It ends in Khartag Point just north of Gnaar Mok - so a little bit of walking and almost no combat nets you one of the best one-handed longswords in the vanilla game (with a secret upgrade to probably my favorite longsword), with nearly every town involved being near the starting area.

Goldbrand:
Chop: 10-50
Slash: 10-45
Thrust: 10-25
Enchant: 10-30 Fire Damage on strike
Enchant Charge: Only 50, its downfall. This is about 10 attacks before it relies on base damage, which is still very high for a one-handed sword (so with a shield it's awesome). The upgraded version of this sword though...my god. Look it up.

I also REALLY like the Daedric Crescent, but that one's a bit tougher to get without cheating.

Plebeians, all of you. Skullcrusher does 10-60 Chop damage, is weightless, fortifies attack 5 points (makes it easier to hit things) and is fairly easy to get. Go to Sadrith Mora, head east to the Omaren Ancestral Tomb, dodge or kill the two or three atronachs in the dungeon at the bottom, levitate up to grab it. All it takes is a little moxie and minimum prep work.
