The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

A question about the npcs in this game
So I'm looking at buying this amazing rpg I have played skyrim but I have heard this is way better the one thing I want to know is what are the npcs like in this game do they have a lot of personality and are they as good as the ones in skyrim(by this I don't mean how good they are at navigating the world I mean like do they have a day-to-day schedule ) because I have heard some crazy story's about the ones in skyrim(like someone steals from someone then like way later they show up in like a cave on the other side of the world and kill you) if anyone can answer my question I would appreciate it a lot :steamhappy:

I have played this game for a long time, but I have very limited Skyrim experience. That being said, I don't think they are alike. The NPCs in Morrowind don't have schedules unless you use mods. The NPCs have specific topics for dialog and it can get very repetitive. The NPCs generally stay in their assigned area or even spot unless you have them join you as a companion or for a quest. The generic NPCs are one of the things I like least about Morrowind.

However, with that being said, I love this game and there are plenty of great mods to use if you are so inclined. But with the vanilla game, don't expect much from the NPCs.

If you buy it, I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

It's commonly known that Morrowind npcs haven't daily schedules at all (only some wnadering in the area or few npcs that teleport to other locations by scripts). The daily schedules aren't a traditional rpg or old open worlds feature, but a very recent addition. There were some very old primitive attempts to do daily schedules, but the first game that implemented a complex daily schedule system in npcs was Gothic, one year before Morrowind release, and this was an exception, so even Oblivion, 6 years after had worst daily schedules than Gothic. Skyrim's daily schedules even if they are totally cosmetic and non interactive were a good addition to Skyrim, improving the dubious Oblivion's ones. This isn't the only good addition by Skyrim, the mining and crafting sytem are other examples. These Skyrim additions that Morrowind hadn't are really few however in comparison with the hundreds, literally, of aspects in which Morrowind did it better.

Your Skyrim's "crazy story" sounds totally fake to me. The only similar thing that exist in Skyrim are the random hired thugs that appear when you have a bounty for steal or murder, but they are repetitive, generic and truly annoying bunch of randomly generated clones, not unique npcs chasing you by your past crimes. This is a general Skyrim problem, specially comparing with Morrowind, too many random/autogenerated content.

Anyways what "you have heard" about how Morrowind "is way better" continue to be totally true by other, many other motives:

-More skills and attributes.
-Way better magic system.
-More factions with many more quests.
-More unique quests.
-More armors and their pieces.
-Many more weapons and more w. types, including spears/throwing weapons/staffs.
-Underwater combat.
-18 equipment slots vs. 7 in Skyrim.
-More ingredients and potions.
-Faction requirements.
-A true directions system to follow.
-Far larger dialogue, even discounting the advices and directions, much more interactive and generally better written too.
-More diverse dungeons.
-More enterable buildings.
-Bigger cities and many more settlements.
-More services including many more types of immersive fast travel services.
-More npc reactivity to your actions.
-No enemy leveling.
-No protected/unkillable npcs.
-Haggling with traders

etc.

No, Morrowind's NPCs are nowhere near the level of those found in Oblivion and Skyrim. There's pretty much no personality to be found in most of them, since many are carbon copies of each other who exist to fill space and ensure the player can't escape the information the game wants them to have. Of course there are some unique NPCs who have individual personalities, but even then the poor writing holds them back. Morrowind's NPCs are generally written to dump information and provide as many hyperlinks as possible, not to sound like people having a conversation.
- No NPC schedules. NPCs are static; some may wander, but it's on a pre-set path and will NEVER go further than the confines of their town or cavern unless attacked, in which case they will chase you as far as possible until you enter another cell, when they'll decline to pursue you further - but they WILL wait for you when you return to their cell.

There are mods to fix all these things up, if you need them; they are performance intensive, though.

-They have personality, but they're more like book characters than video game characters. The writing isn't cringey, it's subdued - lots of subtext that might come across as obtuse or even bland and then text that comes off as plain weird.

There are mods that aim to fix this by adding more dialogue and fleshing out the characters, but it could fungus up your game if not careful.

98% of all NPC's in MW are copy/paste clones, there's zero reason to go through their background/whatever topic. The mentioned LGNPC mod doesn't change much, a trader telling me how he get his licence: *fascinating*, plz go on.

But somehow, despite >1k h in both games, I must have missed the incredible " level of those found in Oblivion and Skyrim". Yes, they have a schedule, yes, they are VO'ed and yes, they are incredible bland and annoying. "I saw a mudcrab...", after the 17th time in 25 sec, you wish yourself back to the textboxes of MW.

They are bland, cause the have large, blinking neon signs over their head: "good guy, look here". Can you imagine the companion harbinger being a mafia thug? A mage at the college being a cold blooded killer? DId you ever suspect, that Martin might be a bad guy? Certainly not.

Despite it's flaws, this is were MW is far superior to the newer TES games, you're encouraged to *think* about the NPC's. To shape your own view of the world and the events. Is the antagonist really the bad guy? There's no hand holding in that regard, the game doesn't ram *it's* view of a NPC with an iron fist into your face.

The first -more background dialog- is LGNPC at http://lgnpc.org. I'd install the dialog only package, cause it has less potential for conflicts.
No idea about scheduled npc's, I find schedules (way) more annoying than "immersive"
Vanilla MW doesn't has companions. "Morrowind comes alive" aka MCA has, but dont expect companions as fleshed out as the 3dNPC ones. MCA can be found at https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/6006/?

Install using NMM or a similar app..

Edit: apart from MCA, there're alot of companion mods on Nexus

If you are interested in companions, look for Emma’s or Grumpy’s companions. They are very good. Also, look for the companion category on Nexus Mods or MW Modhistory. I have at least 15 companion mods that I am testing and some are very good.

Also search for best companion mods.

I also wouldn't go into Morrowind expecting the same rules Skyrim follows. The combat is completely different and there are stats (Like strength and agility) to keep track of. Still however out of all the Elder Scrolls games I've found this one the iteration I keep coming back to.

Morrowind also has Multiplayer now, just so you know.
