The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

Crash on Dwemer Cog
So I am trying to do the quest for the Dwemer Puzzle Cube and I keep crashing when I try to pick up a dwemer cog. It happens with the same cog every time, along with a few other bits and bobs in the dungeon like a coin I found on a table. It's not a huge problem, as I then just avoid the items, but it happens every time I pick them up and I'm wondering if anyone might know why. Fixing it would also be cool, but if there isn't one I'd suffice with knowing why it's happening.

It's a normal CTD, just 'Morrowind has stopped responding.' and then I have to cancel out of the error to continue. No actual error message or anything, just that. I'm running the game on Windows 8.1 with XP compatability, if that makes a difference.

Are you using any mods?

It could be a problem with a mesh or a texture.

The problem is that the file system in Morrowind is difficult to navigate. It wasn't until Oblivion that they made the files more organized and easier to find, so locating the problem may be difficult.

I am now, but I had this same problem before I installed them, so I don't think it's the mods.

If it were a problem with a mesh or texture, wouldn't that cause problems with all cogs and coins, not just the singular ones in the dungeon?
