The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

Beast races can't wear helmets or boots?
I'm fairly new to Morrowind, but my favorite races to play in ES games are the argonian and khajiit. Right now, I'm playing as a khajiit, and the inability to wear helmets or boots, is just... really s***ty. I knew they were unable to before I chose khajiit anyway, but I underestimated how much it would suck. Being unable to wear two very important armor pieces seems like a major handicap. I honestly can't see why anyone would pick either of the beast races considering this. But I'm a Morrowind noob, so I may be missing something. Is there a balancing factor for khajiits and argonians that makes it worth it in the end? Like, are their racial abilities really good or something? I'm debating starting another file or maybe modding it so I can wear helmets and boots anyway.

if you think it's necessary...

keep wasting your time on fake honesty, and even on lore breaking mods...

who am i to try to convince you not to tremble in front of the elite understanding?

Getting back to the topic, what I've read is the the reason Khajit and Argonians in Morrowind can't wear boots and helmets has to do with their overall body-shape. The lore classifies them as "beast races", and to give them that feel, the devs gave them heads that wouldn't fit into full-face helmets and made their legs digitigrade. In other words, they walk on their toes; shoes and boots built for humanoids can't fit on those kinds of feet. Besides, it's not like Khaj'its and Argonians need them; shoes and boots are for protection, and paw-pads and scales do that job just fine.

Well this is quite a contradiction, isn't it? With all this western talk about cultures, diversity and all thst jazz they didn't allow argonians and khajits wear no helmets. They shoved them into the same pattern as all other races - you wear a helmet, boots and walk as a normal person or you are out of the game. This is western society and hypocrisy.

While it makes sense in game, it feels a bit "unfair" as that's just another slot of armor argonians and khajiit arent allowed to wear. Now if they had something to rectify/justify this decision game mechanics wise (something as simple as argonians and khajiit just have a little armor rating by default), then it wouldn't bug me, but it's the fact that this does not exist in any capacity that makes it strange imo. Keep in mind that the no boots or helmets thing was added to morrowind, it was not in the previous entries of the game, so I guess they were just experimenting (and it seems they didn't like it too much!). Not being able to use the boots of blinding speed really sucks early game.

I'm playing morowind for the first time. I picked Argonian, and have never had an issue with this. Why are these slots so important? You can use certain helmets anyway.

They're armor slots that Argonians and Khajit can't use. This in turn means that player characters of those two races, and ONLY those two races, can't normally get as high an armor rating as the other races can get. It wasn't an issue at first, but it became an issue when Oblivion was released. The Khajit and Argonians in Oblivion and Skyrim can wear helmets and boots just fine, and that threw off a lot of people who started playing Morrowind after first playing Oblivion or Skyrim.

they compensate this through: 1. better agility and speed (argonians being fastest in game) stats from the get go. 2. late in game they are still fastest, since encumbrance effects base speed anyways. 3. it's not working as intended in vanilla game, but shoes supposed to affect sneaking, and possibly even pickpocketing.

people tend to ruin their own experience by messing up balance with obscure mods, that's all.

I'm pretty sure the type of necromancy performed on this thread would be illegal in Morrowind.
