The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

Filthy Cheater?
I'm doing my first serious (as in determined to finish) Morrowind playthrough. I chose the Scout class. A few minutes into the game I was attacked by a Dark Brotherhood assassin. I killed him, sold his gear, and now have a full bonemold armor suit just minutes into the game. Do you think this was a bad move? Is scrounging for armor and gold an integral part of the game's charm that I should experience? Or is it not a big deal?

I would say it is not a big deal. You will get many oportunities for better armor later on.

I always go for the Dark Brotherhood Assassin asap.

I don't really consider using or selling the DB armor cheating because there are so many exploits in the game that allow you to make alot of money in no time. Then you can just go to Ghostgate and buy glass armor at level 1. You can even find a set of glass armor on a corpse for the taking.

I usually have the Cuirass of the Saviors Hide and the Boots of the Apostle at level 1 which are far better then the DB armor.

You can also easily steal a fortune of sellables. Like in Balmora Temple, you can just push the NPC near the entrance out of his room and then steal from the cabinet. I stole a bunch of valuable items including 3 saint shields worth 50k each and when the cabinet resets you can do it again.

Of course if you want the game to remain a challenge, you might want to excercise some restraint, but that is your choice.

I always use a mod that delays the Dark Brotherhood assassin until my character has actually become somebody important, and I much prefer it that way. But I don't consider it cheating when you're just reacting to Bethesda's bad decision to spawn the assassin that early in the game.

The early assasin spawn didn't occur in the original release because it's a prelude to the Tribunal expansion that happened afterwards.

It depends if you want to play the game with the original vision and difficulty of the base game. The assasin spawn and the OP light armor seemed more like a reward for buying/installing the expansion back in the day and was an indicator that the expanion installed correctly (IIRC the expansion instructions were to sleep at a bed after installing).

I generally avoid the early Assassin suit both as armor and as a source of quick cash early in the game. That being said, you still can make obscenely large amounts of gold very quickly if you know where to look; and a high alchemy skill allows you to buy food and sell potions made from it at a fat profit. Plus, gold is largely irrelevant in the endgame because you end up amassing Daedric weapons which are so expensive that no (well, almost no) merchants can actually buy it from you.

My first successful character had an ebony cuirass and daedric greaves after just 5 days, and that was back before the Tribunal expansion came out, so no, I wouldn't worry about it much.

imo getting gold isnt really cheating you can easily get it leveling alchemy and even make enough from alchemy to buy ebony pretty quickly. Even later on if you dont do alchemy morrowind is a game where gold is just plain common

i would more likely justify cheating as spawning in unique gear/raising you levels to 99 etc where you have a unnatural advantage

It's more like choosing how you want to play than actual cheating. You can always ignore the loot entirely if you wish to do so, but early richdom isn't that bad ;)

You'll find that money is actually very easy to come by in this game. You'll run into the issue of not being able to find enough merchants with enough money to by your huge amounts of highly valuable loot.
