Super loud sound effect

Whenever I take damage, the game plays this sound effect which sounds like two pieces of metal clashing into each other. I think it's supposed to indicate that my armor blocks the hit.

The problem is that the sound effect is REALLY loud. I even tried turning all sounds off in the audio settings but the sound still plays. Other sounds and the music work fine but this sound effect is trying to blow my ears up.

I don't have any mods except for the config thing which forces the game into 1080p. Everything else is untouched.

This used to happen every now and then when I first started playing Morrowind but the problem was never this big. The sound was loud but it was not on the ear-destroying level it is now.

I have recently moved Morrowind to my SSD, but I don't think it's supposed to cause something like this.

What should I do? Validate files? Move the game back to my main hard drive?

I don't know what could completely fix the issue, but I know what you mean, some game sounds are really too loud and strangely can't be changed in the settings.

However try the Morrowind Code Patch, which fixes many bugs and inconveniences, there might be a sound fix there.

Did you ever find a solution for this? I downloaded the code patch but don't know if it is working. The sound is still loud

Your audio device>Properties>Enhancements>Loudness Equalization?

Go into the sound folder, listen to the sounds, when you find the sound either replace it with another sound or use a wave editor to reduce the volume level for that sound.
