Just got this game lat night, really enjoying it. It feels so good, and fresh to play. After my first session I was like, I bet this game isn't using Unity. I checked out my local files, and confirmed my suspicion. I hope other game devs take note. Unity side scrollers have just gotten stale and all feel the same.

That said...I can see the game is using fmod for audio, but is it built with a custom engine?

I can definitely tell you it's not Unity. It uses Gamemaker Studio as its engine which isn't custom made (it's free to download too).

Unity gets a bad rap for being the engine so easy to make Cheap Cashgrab Horror Games.
You sometimes forget games like Cuphead are Unity.

The only thing I don't like about Unity is that I can't play Unity games without fear of my Craptop going to detonate at any moment.
(Both Unity AND Unreal 4. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ I need to stop being lazy.)

All I can say is, every side scroller made in Unity feels the same to me now, even the good ones. This game feels fresh and different, and I like it a lot!

Yeah I see whatcha mean, its probably that Unity, considering its technically a 3D engine, has a bit more input lag when dealing with 2D games. I might be completely wrong, but i think thats the reason why GM games really feel responsive.

Unity as an engine is good, but the amount of ♥♥♥♥♥♥ mobile games made with it give it a bad name. BONELAB/BONEWORKS were made in unity and they're good games, Sons of the Forest is a unity game.

You should try out Rotund Rebound. It's made in Unity, but I think it's a creative and unique 2D platformer that's as great as Pizza Tower is.
