Well, while it is a reboot, it doesn't totally invalidate the first game. The real world setting of the first is replaced with more fantasy setting, and in a way, the intro felt like it "EXPLAINED" how the break down occured in the first game's opening: the back door. They do acknowledge other elements from the first game's pre-occupation history like the energy/oil crisis, middle east wars stretching our military, etc.
So I think, while it is a reboot, you may enjoy how they "retcon" some elements to make it more future tech sci-fi weaponry than the traditional arms in first game. Also, I like to think the "leader of the resistance" who you meet in the opening, is your character from the first game. Not stated. Not official, but it fits well.
