I recommend giving this a watch to understand how the two games differ. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzCpNgAhUmw tl;dr version is that they're complete opposites in terms of design. Old game controlled the player constantly. New game gives player heaps of freedom. So much freedom that some players get bored very quickly.

It was slow at first - but I ended up liking it and major bugs are fixed.

If you are the type of person who judges a game in the first 5-10 mins...you probably won't like it. If you are a bit more open minded then you should like it.

I hated the first HF. It was every cliche thing that's wrong with SP campaigns: painfully linear, terrible AI NPCs who get in your way, you name it. I almost skipped HF:R until some friends played it during the free weekend and said they really liked it. I tried it and bought it.

HF:R is, well, if not "open world" then "open zone" and gives you flexibility in how to approach a situation. You're rarely saddled with NPC companions and when you are, they're bearable. There's also NPC generic guys you can recruit who are idiots but using them is optional. There's a weapon system that takes a little while to grow into and appreciate but turns out to be a rather nice compromise between "Two weapon slots" and a full arsenal. It doesn't break a lot of new ground: you'll immediately feel some UbiSoft rub-off with the map unlock locations and fort takeovers but it was consistently fun provided you like that style of game.

It's not perfect, of course. The story is somewhere between generic and trying too hard to make a point, as mentioned the generic NPC AI isn't great and it's repetitive but it's leagues better than the original game.

In fairness, he might have owned the game and refunded it, or he might have owned it on consoles or something like that.

First game was an incredible amount of fun.

Second is an irrelevant and unsuccessful open world game without PvP multiplayer. Nobody asked for this.

Did you forget the free weekend already? There was plenty of sampling.

Homefront: TR was made by people who had no interest in the Homefront IP. It is intended to be "open world Half Life".

People asked for Crytek to stop making mostly linear games like Crysis 2 and Crysis 3 and go back to something like Crysis 1. Well, Homefront: TR is arguably a response to that. It's like Crysis 2, but now you can go wherever you want.

Nobody was asking for Far Cry 2, either. A game with almost no connections to Far Cry, and full of open world padding.
