Do I need to play the first game in order to fully understand this ?
Played the first Homefront long time ago, I remember very few of it. Do I need to play it again to catch up with something?

This game has nothing to do with Homefront 1. If anything, playing Homefront 1 just confuses things.

If you find the game cheap or got it for free when it was on humble bundle play homefront one, its quite a good campaign and was only 4 hours long on hardest diffcuilty

this game is a continuation of the homefront story, different player character though.

This is a reboot of the original! So the first game has NOTHING to do with this one, except the general idea. All of the characters and events are different, including how North Korea takes over. I personally really like the first game and would say it's worth the 4-6 hours it takes to beat it, but just know that this is a whole new game...

If you REALLY want to know more about the backstory to Homefront The Revolution, they have a phone app that will not only allow you to unlock a few items in the solo/co-op side missions (one of them requires you to drive past a Gamestop with the app open, LMAO), but also has a bunch of videos on the gameworld's backstory that you will NOT find in-game (which is a shame because it's very thorough and interesting).

Edit: here's a link to the videos I mentioned above, done in a cool documentary/propaganda-style (APEX is the acting power in North Korea in the game): https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeh2LNYxtKKO5GzlaKIH9FQ/videos

The official website also has a timeline that breaks the game's history down (i.e. North Korea's rise to power), but this page is flagged as "unsafe" by Chrome when I go there, for some reason. All of this is in the app too, so that's generally the best way to go.

They've made it so that The Revolution doesn't contradict any of the events in the first game, but doesn't actively acknowledge any of them either. The Revolution gives its own explanation to the invasion though.

Bottom line is - no, you don't have to play the first game, and beating it will add nothing to your playthrough of the sequel.

In fact I'd discourage you from playing the first one because the campaign is just the very definition of bland.
