ship upgrade materials
Does anyone have a good idea on where i can get materials to upgrade my ship? i know i need resin, silk, ropes, and ironwood, but i haven't really found any on traders, or ships i pillage. i really want to upgrade the flying heart or my trusty mirage before i start the FTJR storyline.

Try fo raid feelt called "trading expidition" they have special materials and foud countries have that kind of fleet. Othise you'll neesmd too buy materiaka frim certain trader's when u finish certain quest. You can also sack a town. There will be a chance the twon u sack has certain contraband items.

all nations have trade expeditions consisting of ... 2-3 ships
if you are highly leveled assaulting them is like candy

I have gotten most of my upgrade materials from the floating barrels you see in the world map. When you go to take the barrel aboard, when you go to the battle screen you will either see a single barrel (which just has pesos) or you will see the barrel plus a bunch of floating crates. If you pick up the crates, often they contain the rare ship upgrade materials. You can also buy ropes (I think?) from Fadey and Ironwood from Jan at some point, not sure about the other materials.

If you are low level, the floating barrels have materiels in small quantities, if you are middle levels, trade expeditions, usually 2 ships, but you have to find them first, which mean checking every fleet you encounter on the high sea because there is no discerning feature to these fleets, but when you stop them on high sea it would say in the dialog box that pops that this is a trade expedition with so and so number of ships.
i have not come across any strategic materials (that cant be bought in stores) in sea barrels

Not all of them have materials, some have just some pesos and junk, some have pesos and a bunch precious stones, not sure if you can cheese them by saving and loading.

1. In the early game, you can gather a few strategic resources near barrels on the map. Sometimes, besides the barrel itself, there are 10-50 resources floating around it.
2. Early quests “Caribbean in a nutshell” and “The Last Lesson” will bring enough strategic resources to upgrade a level 6-4 ship. After returning the blade to Fadey, you’ll be able to buy ropes from him.
3. “Under the Jolly Roger” quest will yield silk.
4. After completing the “Price of Consumption” quest, you can buy resins from the doctor a month later.
5. After the “Dutch Gambit” on the Dutch side, you’ll be able to buy silk.

6. Mid-game, you can start raiding “trade expeditions.” These are medium-sized ships on the map. Before attacking, the information window will say “trade expedition.” They usually consist of two ships. If you don’t want to raid them, raise a friendly flag, approach the flagship, send a boat, and offer to trade. You can buy resources at the smuggled market price from the flagship captain. Trade expeditions often spawn in the area between Isla Tesoro, Tortuga, Espanola, and Saint Martin. North and northeast of the map.
7. In your colony on Isla Mona, you can build a sawmill and receive 20 units of ironwood monthly for 10 doubloons each and 5 rum and wine.
8. After the “Pirate Saga,” you can buy ironwood in Blueweld from the pirate captain. Also you will get some ironwood from Helen stash during this quest.
9. A lot of resources are given for the quest with Dodson. After building his ship and capturing the frigate “Fortune.”
10. Towards endgame, you can raid colonies for many strategic resources.
