I can't hire officers in taverns

I'm playing Beta 1.4 and I'm level 22, but when I go to a tavern and try to hire an officer, it tells me 100 coins, and when I try to pay, I don't have any money. Can anyone help me with why this is happening?.

I have plenty of money and an officer position is available. When I was able to hire other officers, they asked for 4,000-7,000 coins, but since they're asking for 100 coins, I can't hire them.

You need doubloons for those.

And how do I convert pesos to doubloons?

go to the userer, they always have a small amount of doublons to sell for pesos.
And you can sell there diamants and gems for doublones.

Buying from usurer works. Also you can often find doubloons in treasures, so do some treasure hunting too.

also there are sometimes people you can talk to in towns, or they ask you on their own, to take them to another town as passenger on your ship for doubloons.
