What does getting your fortune told do for you?

The ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in each port normally have an option to tell you your fortune. But I'm not entirely sure if they ever actually do anything. I once noticed I gained XP and leveled up from it though. Is that the whole point of it? To gain XP (I'm assuming in correlation towards the amount you gave her)?
