Mutiny - but why?
Hi,

I'm playing in Sandbox mode
I have two ships, one class 3 and another class 4.
I have a full crew of officers and my level is 13
I have a combined nav skill of 70 on my main ship, I have no red minus figures on Pirate stats
My Captain of the level 4 ship has a nav skill of 60
The crew morale level on both ships is heroic
I have plenty of food and rum on both ships
I am not in debt to the crew and pay them on time

I have just had a mutiny, but I cant understand why, all the conditions are fine? I reloaded my save to check the morale level just before the mutiny, it was heroic as I thought. I won the mutiny attempt and checked morale and it was 'Terrible'.

Why am I having a mutiny, any ideas?

Cheers

Is your authority bar low?

Some reason I think its because the men recruited are pirates aka sea dogs. My officers leave me because of it... It suks because you cant fier them or make them better. I fierd all 360 or so of mine

My crew does have a 'Sea Dogs' rating for sailors under the 3 crew areas (sailors, Cannoneers and Soldiers). The crew of the second ship has the same crew ratings also. Do you think this makes a difference?

Do you have slaves in large numbers ? They may revolt, once in a while.

Any officers loyalty being low ? They have a "personality" under their name, if your actions do not align with it, their loyalty will plummet and mutiny will follow.

That still doesn't explain how your morale went from Heroic to Terrible.
Very odd.

I have no slaves and have never dealed in slaves.

Ahh I have just checked, my officers loyalty is high with all of them....but....my authority is low for my character.
I'm not sure how this has happened, but it looks to be the cause.

How did my authority drop to such a low level?
How do I raise authority level?

The authority bar seems to be the issue. Mine is normally medium to high, and then in order to get enough troops trained for caleuche, I loaded upa heavy galleon i wasn't rates to sail and started pirating ship after ship and letting them go when they surredered. For some reason, despite the fact we were winning every fight easily, the authority bar dropped to zero.

It might be about captaining a ship you aren't rated for, or something about letting prize ships go I'm not sure.

If your authority is low, it won't matter how happy your crew is how loyal officers might be, they think you're an incompetent captain, and will see fit to elect a new one. Authority can drop for a number of reasons: not making enough money, too many crew deaths, releasing ships after boarding, etc. The most reliable way I find to raise authority is to hire ♥♥♥♥♥♥ for the crew at brothels, though it takes a while to build up.

Also, ignore Gray Wolf, doesn't know what they're talking about. That's the skill rating of your crew in the three areas, sailing, cannons, and combat. Sea dogs means your crew is the highest skill rating.

Agreed, it does look like an authority issue. I do attack pirate ships (never non-pirates), win the battles, but as I have a good aligned crew I always let them go, do you think this could cause a drop in loyalty?

Interesting, I don't have any problem with making money, I think i have 1.2 mil so no problem there. Not had any issues with mass crew deaths either. Your right about using the Brothel to up your authority, I have reloaded an old game to check. In my game it costs about 3.5k to treat the crew to the ladies of the night, however the amount the authority bar goes up is very small, but it does go up.
I always release the crew after winning a fight - I have a good aligned officer crew, do you think this could cause authority level to drop?

Yeah thought it might just be the skill level of the crew

So any other tips for raising character loyalty, the Brothel looks to be a very expensive and slow way of doing it.

- Never miss a monthly payment
- Always pay the share of your crew the same day after boarding an enemy ship
- Avoid loosing too many men in a short amount of time
- When permanently dismissing officers, give them a certain amount of pesos(part of the dialogue)
- Brothels & "improving morale"(F2)
- Enslaving an enemy crew or sending them off on longboats, instead of throwing them overboard
- Keeping enough rum for consumption

There's a kind of cheesy way you can do it by firing your whole crew, hiring one crew, maxing out his morale through paying bonuses, then firing again and repeating.
StormRangerX Mar 5, 2024 @ 2:22pm
Because they don't like the actions you take.
Scrogdog Mar 5, 2024 @ 2:51pm
Stormy's right. The officers don't leave because of crew issues. In addition to what Stormy said, it could also be because you are not raising loyalty by doing missions for the crown or whatever. The lower the officer's loyalty the sooner they will leave you... often as soon as two months after hire.

This is why one has to be careful when doing non-mission based trading. You are acting as an independent citizen in that case so loyalty is not increased.

Loyalty is mainly increased by undertaking actions that align with their honor, and vice-versa. If you have officers that are men of honor, they really won't like if you're doing senseless killing or enslaving, meanwhile if you have officers that are scoundrels and villains, they won't have much respect for a goody-two-shoes captain. If they take a few hits to loyalty in a row, they'll have a high chance of wanting to leave next time you're in a tavern, or even worse, starting a mutiny.

Sorry I said above 'loyalty' - what I meant to say was Character 'Authority'.

I manged to get the authority up a bit by visiting the Brothel, but now I have had a riot on one of my ships and it has 'left my squadron'.....

What is going on, i'm spending more time keep everyone happy than anything else !!!!

Gotta get that authority up.

If you happen to be doing that quest where you ferry about British marines to Phillipsburg, if you take too long they will try to take over your ship.
