Fix - Can't buy/breed animals and old animals staying after selling
In case anyone has experienced the same problem I had where you randomly cannot buy or breed more animals, it looks like this is linked to the problem where after breeding and selling animals the sold animal is back in the barn after quitting and loading your save again (a problem I was also encountering.)

To solve the problem with the old, sold animal still being in your barn after quitting and restarting the game, I found this answer from another user somewhere in these discussions.

"Sell the animal(s) in the affected slot(s), save, and quit the game entirely from the menu. When you reload the game, you should get back the latest animal that was put in that slot instead of the older animal that kept overwriting the slot."

I personally had to do the above a few times to finally get the full happiness animal that was supposed to be there.

For the other problem, it seems there is a hidden 'max' number of animals the game keeps track of and when you hit that limit you can't buy or breed animals anymore. However, there is no error or message stating as such. By following the above advice to sell the old animals (again) you should then be able to buy and breed your animals as normal.

I hope this helps someone.

Nice to see my advice is helping others, and the behind-the-scenes animal limit might explain some other issues I've been having.

At this point I'm reasonably convinced it's either multiple births in the same day, or breeding with a full coop/barn. Possibly a combination of the two. Haven't done any in-depth testing, but I don't remember it showing up before I unlocked the barn, and something getting messed up either when the "parent" animal comes back or when you sell and replace an animal in the same day makes at least some amount of sense.

On a semi-related note, this topic prompted me to do a more aggressive clear of my barn and coop, and as well as having to clear out some slots multiple times, I've had the same animal show up again at least once (possibly more), so you may have to repeat to fully clear out a slot depending on how badly things are messed up.
