What a strategy is in diamond tree puzzle game?

I can't think of any and it just seems this is pure random and luck based and this sucks..

Sometimes you get unlucky and have to reset a level, but not usually. When I choose a tile to play, I try not to use a unique one. Like, if I'm trying to trying to match a yellow tile and I have to choose between a yellow+purple one or a yellow+green one and I have no other green tiles, I'll play the yellow+purple one.

Well, i haven't figured it out completely, but i think i did the same, keeping the unique ones for the end and coming from multiple directions at once. I have completed all the levels. Didn't take so much time actually.
