How to get Renegade running smoothly on Windows 10/11
Hi there! OWA here from the C&C Renegade community with a guide on how to get your game up, running and ready to rock and roll.

If you have any known issues to add, please feel free to contact me and I will add them to this post.

Credit to the following people for helping with this guide:

  • Learonys

How to Play
Step 1: Buy the Game from Steam

If you're reading this guide you've probably already bought the game, but if not, get the Ultimate Collection from the link below:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2229890/

Step 2: Download and Install the Tiberian Technologies Patch

The Tiberian Technologies Patch has been the best way to experience Renegade for the best part of 20 years now.

The Tiberian Technologies Patch contains:
  • A functioning in-game server listing for Multiplayer
  • An in-game download tool for automatically downloading community maps and mod content when joining servers
  • Additional graphics options, including MSAA Anti-Aliasing, VSync
  • Access to 4K resolutions and HUD scaling
  • Borderless Fullscreen Windowed mode
  • Additional Console commands
  • Many bug fixes, including the infamous 'Bluehell' bug (if you know, you know!)
...and much more!

Download it from this link: Tiberian Technologies Patch[www.tiberiantechnologies.org]

Run the downloaded installer file and follow these instructions:

  1. Accept the terms and click Next
  2. Point the Installer at your Renegade game folder (Default: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Command & Conquer Renegade)
  3. Click Next
  4. Select your Language and click Next
  5. Select your component options and click Next
  6. Watch the installer work it's magic and click Next when it's done
  7. Enter your Renegade Serial Number if you have it, but if you don't that's fine.
  8. Click Close

Step 3: Configure the Game Resolution

To configure your game before you run it you will have to launch the Renegade configuration tool (wwconfig.exe). Below is a short guide on how to use it:
  1. Click "Play Game" in steam and run the Renegade Configuration Tool.
  2. In this tool you can set your resolution as well as many other game options.
  3. Note: DISPLAY 1 is typically your primary monitor in Windows. Click on it and set the resolution via the slider afterwards.
  4. Spend some time setting up your game options via the various tabs (Video, Audio, Performance) and click Ok to close the config tool when you are satisfied.

Step 4: Run the Game

You can now run the game! Click Play Game on Steam and then choose to play the game from the launch options!

Singleplayer

To play Singleplayer, run the game and then click Singeplayer, followed by Campaign.

You will then launch into the campaign.

Multiplayer

To play Multiplayer, run the game and then follow these instructions:

  1. Click Multiplayer
  2. Click GameSpy
  3. Click Options, set a Nickname and then Click Back
  4. Select a Server and Click Join
  5. Follow any instructions that pop up

After following these steps you should be in a Renegade Multiplayer game!

Known Issues

When I join a server, I cannot move

  1. Open the Start Menu and type "Regedit" without the quotes and hit Enter
  2. In the registry editor, navigate to the following folder: "Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Westwood\Renegade\Networking\Options"
  3. Double Click the NetUpdateRate item in this list
  4. If the value is currently 0 - set the value data field to 4b (if Base is set to Hexadecimal, if the option is set to Decimal, simply type 75 in the box).
  5. Click OK and close the Registry Editor

Now when you join a server, the game should work as intended!

When trying to host a LAN game, the game crashes

  1. Follow the steps on the fix above for "When I join a server, I cannot move"

Now you should be able to start a LAN game without crashing the game.

TO NOTE:
The Tiberian Technologies Patch will change your gamesave file location to My Documents/Renegade/client/saves. Game saves will NOT be backed up via steam cloud while using it, as all the saves are now contained in Data/saves

Good call, I'll bring this up and we'll see if we can fix it going forward.

Or at least hash out an idea to go forward.

You can force the game to use the folders inside the game directory instead of Documents by creating a new file "paths.ini" in the Data folder with the following contents:
[paths] UseRenFolder=1

after the TT patch is installed, the game reports "invalid working folder" and does not start. How can I set the right working folder?

Are you getting it in the installer or the game launch itself?

We've got a patch coming out for this soon, either tomorrow or soon, we have to run over some more tests (we've added more resolution support as well as some other stuff) and have to make sure we don't break more than we fix.
thank you jerad

Such a long post and so much text and yet we dont have a clue what the patch actually is doing, next to asking for a CD-Key. Granted, its an ancient old game, so giving away your CD-Key to a random thirdparty tool wont do much harm, but its still pretty omnious. Oh and well, the instruction to "Spend some time setting your game up and click Ok to close the config tool." Glad to have this tutorial, otherwise i would still be stuck in the setup. ;)

Home page of the TT patch website clearly says what is it and what it does. Please do research. https://tiberiantechnologies.org/

Just add the VITAL information in the TRIVIAL long post instead. The post itself had zerro information. If you want people to google, there is no need for such a long post.
