Windows 7?

Has anyone managed to launch Steam's Tiberian Sun edition in Windows 7? Everytime I try to launch the game the processes are killed without any message.

First steps I've tried: replaced the game.exe & SUN.exe with the original ones, also replaced ddraw.dll (2,7 MB!) with its original pendant (42 kB!) which results in instant reinstall the original file if I try to launch. Nothing helped.

Bewildering, "Command & Conquer Remastered" runs without problems (but there's no Tiberian Sun yet).

It's weird: some C&C titles from this bundle are playable with Windows 7, some not. RA doesn't work either.

CNCnet/TSClient last I remember don't have random map generator working

Also might be obvious already, but I guess you already tried compatibility modes and running as admin in combination of either the above I mentioned?

My CNCNET version has a random map generator. Just updated & joined the lobby, in Skirmish I can create random maps.

But again, this does not solve the issue having payed around 10 Euros for old (!!!!) Command & Conquer titles most of them I already own (having payed for this, too) and just isn't running on a system that's much newer than this title. I don't get this logically. I don't want to use an operating system that's nothing else than a bug (which is every version since Windows 8). Make them playable under Linux, and we can talk about alternative operating systems. Unfortunately, these games were developed under Windows and just ported onto the newer versions. Nothing more, nothing left.

Well considering Tiberian Sun works fine on a Steam Deck which runs a version of Linux, you can probably try it yourself?

As for gifting games out of your library, that isn't possible.

Steam Deck/Linux aren't listed as supported operating systems, just Windows 10 (not even Windows 11 is listed). To counter the small handheld monitor and the lack of keyboard & mouse, of course I could pay (next the device) for its docking station, just to play C&C titles. But it's interesting that Steam made it possible to run under Linux without promoting this (in my opinion) important detail.

As for gifting games out of your library, that isn't possible.

It's definitly playable on Windows 7, i played it quite a lot on 7 back in the day.

It's most likely your pc config or something on your OS blocking it.

Why don't you simply use this?

Yeah it's looking like all the classic releases C&C1, RA1, C&C2, RA2+YR are all using specially modified exe files that lock out Windows 7.. aren't they nice lol. Naturally there are similar threads like this one for all those other C&C games too and thankfully solutions has been found in each, the cncnet fan patches.

And sure enough I just tried the cncnet patch installer for C&C2 (link below) and it works with the steam release and replaces the exe file with their own which keeps the no-cd and has no Win7 block! Like with the other C&C games they also add their excellent config tool exe allowing for more customization of graphics and modern resolutions too. So I can confirm the steam C&C2 release is now working on my Windows 7. :)

Also FYI this is just a simple patch and different to the bigger full TSOnline multiplayer cncnet app installer with all the extra stuff that Tsundere posted earlier in this thread.

Thank you for this valueable information! I'll give it a try replacing the EXE files when time comes by!
