[Video]
ScreenWidth=960
ScreenHeight=540
StretchMovies=no

(I have those, 960x540 is like the half or quarter of 1080p resolution where the game still has its chunky pixels and the zoom level is closer to original intended but it's stretched more naturally to fit a 16x9 screen)

in DDrawCompat ini:
SupportedResolutions = 640x400, 640x480, 800x600, 960x540

(so just add ", 1920x1080" at the end of the line)

(but I really recommend something more like 960x540 simply because the higher the resolution the more zoomed out the view will be which will be especially at 4k a problem I think from just controlling the gameplay, understanding what's going on on the screen)

EDIT: Also, from PCGW:
Another way to change resolution is to add this line beneath the [Video] lines in sun.ini:

AllowHiResModes=yes

This will let you change the resolution in the game menu to any supported by your computer.

That would be awefull and unplayable and unreadable small ui etc …. Its best like it is for original games. For modern res u have CaC remaster with modern graphics
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Just use dgvodoo2, it can make any old game play in any resolution without making it too zoomed out.
Joe Mar 7, 2024 @ 2:33pm
the problem is increasing the resolution makes the screen tiny you need T-1000 Vision to see it correctly
metal_hamster Mar 7, 2024 @ 3:18pm
It looks fine as is.
Mr Andy Mar 7, 2024 @ 4:00pm
Yes a slight increase in resolution is the first thing I felt this needed.

It's not a true 3D game. You can upscale it naively
MangorushZ Mar 7, 2024 @ 8:07pm
I find 1280x720 looks good enough to me, not to zoom in and not to zoom out either on a 1440p monitor, imo it looks good to me.

Anyone know if this works with ultrawide? What would the ultrawide equivalent be for the 960x540 resolution? I want it to not be super zoomed out, but I'd like to use the left and right sides of the screen. I want to keep the height at 540, but I'm not sure what the horizontal resolution should be.

I tried the edits above, but I didn't see that resolution in the game after making those two edits....

It should automatically set to that resolution when you go into the game, you won't see the desire resolution in the menu.

TibSun @ 1280x720 windowed and Lossless Scaling to full screen it is how I play on my primary 4k screen. Works great, looks great. 1080p with the UI and some unit scaling, small maps, etc... just not what TibSun was meant for.

Though would be cool to see this one get some remaster/remake/modernization attention.

Not sure if that's what you were looking for, but for instance you could try 1260x540, 1400x600, or perhaps 1120x480 (for 21:9 ultra widescreen)
Is 32:9 the other common ultrawide aspect ratio? Anyway when I put 540 in the pixels height on that site I got 1920 on width, so 1920x540 might be a nice round number in that case?

None of these tips seem to do anything, still stuck in low res with no widescreen no matter what I do? bit weird.

Can you copy+paste your sun ini & ddrawcompat ini for reference so we can see if you missed something?
Also, you can try alternatives like on PCGamingWiki the TSPatch
https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Command_%26_Conquer:_Tiberian_Sun#TSpatch
Or you can try the TS Client
https://www.moddb.com/mods/tiberian-sun-client/downloads/tiberian-sun-client-600
Extracting that into the TS installation folder and renaming the tiberiansun executable into the existing sun executable (deleting/moving/renaming the original SUN.exe first of course)

--- ALSO, of course the video files won't "stretch" naturally and many menu elements, so they will be slightly centered with black bars surrounding them, but the important question is, once in gameplay, are black bars still present or does it then take up the screen naturally?

Hmmm, I have Lossless Scaling on Steam, haven't used it in 2D games before, which upscaler option should one use for a game like TibSun in the list it has?
