how to get the game running on modern pc's

if your game isnt working on a newer pc with windows 11, either having a blank screen or not responding, or hanging and throwing up direct x 8 errors, then try this.

visit the install folder

(usually found at \steamapps\common\Command and Conquer Generals)

in that folder find the file dbghelp.dll and delete it, this bypasses the check thats hanging up the system and should allow the game to boot.

you may also have to launch the game via the real executable instead of the desktop shortcut, the real one is also located in same place as dbghelp.dll file, its called generals.exe, so just double click that and the game should run. you might find it looks like its going to stop responding again, but just give it 10/15 seconds.

you should be able to right click drag generals.exe to desktop and select create shortcut.

you might find you also have to do the same for zero hour, i havn't downloaded that yet.

Worked for me, but I had to try it several times

Try:
1) Install Generals and Zero. enter both. fail msg. Restart and works 2nd time. idk why

OR just use this app..

2) also found this Mod / app patch that allows 1080p etc and does everything for you. Designed for the Origin 17 game package not the steam but works just as well. It will say invalid game source but just ignore and continue bc wants the ORIGIN files not steam. Also i modified my generals exe when the requested popup change asked for. Figured if something went wrong could just install steam game again. So far all working well.
