black screen after quitting the game

Anyone else experiencing a black screen after quitting the game?

like for real, pc won't go to desktop and is stuck with the black screen, need to force restart my pc as pc is so slow at that point it isn't funny, taskmanager does nothing.

anyone else has the same issue?

OS: Windows 11 (24H2)
CPU: Ryzen 9 7900 X
GPU: 4070 TI

NO MODS INSTALLED

Yes, fired it up for the first time and so much this. Can't tab out, can't see task manager, have to restart.

not really a fix but, i just press ctrl + shift + esc on main menu to bring up task manager and close the game that way (it works)

I get this too, can't get to Task Manager either. Have to CTRL+ALT+DEL and sign out then back in to get around it.

Same, YR glitching a lot, black screen freeze when exiting the game. It's worked fine in the past, so I wonder if the latest Steam update broke it.

I just got this as well. I opened the task manager, but it wouldn't let me see it once open.

I managed to finagle my way into closing it via the task manager (hover over where the icon is on the taskbar, click and hold and move the cursor over to the YR exe on the task manager window, then quickly let go and right click to be able to force the task to end)... but what a pain in the ass!

Hopefully somehow they'll put out a fix for this.

Here's the dealio. On there will be a link to DDWrapper. Download the .zip file, and extract the files (directly, not as a separate folder) into your RA2 files (right click the game in your Steam game list and select "Browse Local Files")
You'll need to overwrite/replace the ddraw.dll file. This is perfectly safe to do.

After that, open the aqrit.cfg file in notepad, and change "FirceDirectDrawEmulation" to equal 1 instead of 0. Then save the file.

I've just tested it and it not only stops the black screen when you close the game, it also changes the aspect ratio to fill the screen! No more black bars on each side of your Game!

That issue is about a black screen on startup though. But yea, replacing the wrapper probably works.

Yes, I know, but I was having the black screen lockdown problem when closing the game, same as the rest of the posters. I tried out that fix and it works to fix both problems, apparently.

I get the same black screen after quitting even after these fixes.

When game closes screen goes black until I open task manager then it goes away and game is not listed in task manager

the company ported this game to steam, stated that compatible with windows 10, and the problem exists. what kind of **** is this? they must have tested and fixed all those problems before putting it on sale. i prefer playing the old game from 20 years ago over spending $ just to get a game without all the issue addressed.

This is the game from 20 years ago. Nothing has been "ported"; they just added some much-needed compatibility fixes to actually make that 20-year-old game run on modern operating systems.

It works very well. Thanks. I also noticed that once you overwrote the ddraw.dll, the game graphic looks much better. No annoying pixelized units.
