Steam Deck user reporting in (crash on startup)
Hello. I have a 512gb LCD Deck.

I keep it updated both in Steam and in the OS. I also use the "Stable" System Update Channel, if that even matters.

I updated Dead Pixel with the 1.4 patch, booted it right away and it crashed. I was in gaming mode so I didn't get the Error.txt popup.

Then within the Gaming Mode, I tried different Compatibility branches. Proton Ex, Proton Hotfix and Proton 9.0-4 will make the game run, but it's running at "1fps" and I can barely navigate menus.

Then I tried switching to Desktop mode to see if anything was out of order/needed update. When I booted DP here, it still crashed but I could see the Error.txt popup.

Dead Pixels has encountered an error. Version:STEAM 1.4 Could not load asset sprites//splash//xbox//splash! If you need anything else, or if you want me to test further don't hesitate to ask.

Sorry this is happening and thank you for moving this to a thread so I can try to help.

You shouldn't need the compatibility modes as its native linux version for steam deck. So I would turn compatibility off.

Did you previously have Dead Pixels installed on the steam deck before today's patch?

Yes. I forgot to mention I also try uninstalling and reinstalling. Still nothing. Perhaps a config file that needs deleting?

Could you go into desktop mode and go to where the game is installed (You can do this in the games properties in steam)
and see if the "sprites//splash//xbox//" folder exists. It should be in the "content" folder in the games folder.

The game is crashing because it cant find it and I'm curious if it is there.

Its pretty late here so It might be the morning before I can reply again.

Yep, the folder's there with 2 splash.xnb files.

Could you try:

1) Rename the content folder in the game's files to "ContentX"
2) In the game's properties on steam select "Verify the integrity of the games files"
3) Turn off the compatibility stuff the game's properties.

And see if that works

Just got back from work, here goes.

I did what you asked. It still crashes, except, it's a different error now.

Dead Pixels has encountered an error. I think my gut reaction is that something is left of the old build and it is causing issues with the new one. For some reason an uninstall is not clearing it.

Could you try:

1) Go to the folder with the games files and delete everything in there.
2) In the game's properties on steam select "Verify the integrity of the games files"

I just did that, it still crashes with the same error as my previous post.

Where is the AppData folder in SteamOS? Perhaps it's the files over there?
Hi, a bit off topic but fresh install without compatibility on my LCD 512Go work great, 60fps no problem.
with proton appdata is locate:
/home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/compdata/(random-number)/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/

Without proton it depend of the game.

Game options, saves etc on deck are in:
/home/deck/SavedGames/ Dead Pixels/

Thanks for the headsup.

I tried uninstalling, deleting any files in these folders then reinstalling. Still crashes with the same error as my latest post above.

You could try deleting the files, but the crash is a graphics issue and I dont expect it to change anything.

Could you email me at j.common@csr-studios.com
What I'll do is give you a download of the linux build outside of steam, and if that works it will mean the issue is with steam.

EDIT:
Another thing you could try is if the DP2 demo runs or not as they both use the same frameworks.

I just tried the demo and it works flawless. This is strange...
CantStrafeRight  [developer] Apr 15 @ 5:55pm
For those that end up here through google searches, we didn't find the exact cause, but the game runs fine on steam deck if the steam client is closed.

I suspect that its probably a setting somewhere in the steam client causing the issue.
seq Apr 16 @ 7:09am
For what it's worth I'm getting the exact same issue as Vagrant on both my Steam Deck LCD with stable SteamOS 3.6.24 and on my Lenovo laptop (IdeaPad Pro 5, Ryzen 7 8845HS, running Fedora 42 with KDE Plasma). It looks to be same error code as well (566cb9f5701b44c69df43bdb8f1c876a). I tried all the steps you tried. The Dead Pixels 2 demo worked flawlessly however, on both units. Let me know if I can help out with anything.

@seq

Could you post the crash log?
