I'm also more than willing to help people with technical issues. Even when people call me trash.
It sounds like you possibly have some software that is emulating 3rd party controllers and this is causing issues with the game. The game already supports these kinds of control pads and now it is seeing your xbox pad as 2 different pads, possibly with one having the buttons mixed up.
You will want to disable the control pad emulator software.
-If you installed one (you might have installed this to get an older game to work with an xbox pad), you want to close it when playing.
-If you didn't install something like that, Steam's Input support might be causing it and needs to be turned off for the game to run right. (right click game in Steam> Properties> Controller> Disable Steam Input)
