Rookie Servers?
Hello guys. Ive noticed a lot of growing frustrastion among the more veteran INS players regarding people who seem to have trouble acclimitizing to the unique gameplay and modes contained in the game. There was, of course, a flood of new purchasers(including myself) during the recent Winter sale. Unfortunately, this has not been channeled into anything constructive that I have seen, with veteran players entering matches, complaining of all the newbies, and quickly leaving, often after throwing any number of insults and condescension. Not by any means saying that everyone does this, I have seen plenty of players who were nothing but helpful to the clueless, but I've seen it enough to be noteworthy.

What I want to ask is if there are any plans for rookie servers? Natural Selection 2 has a system where certain servers are marked as newbie friendly, and they are generally frequented by some moderately experienced players who are willing to be patient and help newcomers rather than denigrate them for pushing down their own performance. I think the value of such a system to INS is self-evident. New players would have a chance to learn the game, experienced players who are interested may help them, those who do not wish to be dragged down by poorly performing newbies simply avoid said servers.

Regards to whoever decides to read this, and apolgies for any lack of clarity or disrespect.

You wouldn't think that capturing objectives would be such a difficult concept to grasp.
Perhaps not, but from what I have seen many of the newbies fail the grasp the connection between capturing points and respawn waves/ team respawns. I have also seen more than a few confused as to why they lost a Firefight game when all points were held by the enemy( in this case the newbie was under the impression a team had to be eliminated in order to lose). While I agree it is frustrating when people fail to play the objective, I still feel like a place in which they could test the waters would be worthwhile. As a side note, it would also quarantine them from players who do not wish to deal with their lack of experience.
If they're too stupid to read the big "YOUR TEAM WILL RESPAWN WHEN AN OBJECTIVE IS CAPTURED" then no amount of noob servers are going to help them. The biggest thing hurting them is the fact most think you have to accessorize the hell out of your weapon to be good. Most of the attachments are nothing more than useless crap with the exception of the grip and ammo upgrades.

I understand. But that is not the only problem I have seen new players face. Plenty of them could use coaching on basic shooting mechanics and tactical movement, not really the kind of stuff you get from text overlays. I see a lot of folks playing INS like Counter Strike, which occasionally works but often ends with them moving into the open and being shot, or not being cautious indoors. Plenty of people learn the proper way to play on their own, but is there really something wrong with aiding those who have trouble?
There are plenty of veterans that are completely clueless when it comes to that aspect as well. Best way to learn is to get killed. Adapt. Overcome. Learn from your mistakes.
I agree, to be honest. I still see the value in such a system, though. Some people need the hand, and more decent players enhances everyone's experience.

Currently i only read questions like "how can i talk", or "what should i do?" - at that point i kinda gave up, besides the huge amount of people playing "1337 snipers", camping in the middle of nowhere.
> I absolutely feel with you on this one.

Small story: i remember the first few words between a mate and me when he started INSmod, it kinda went like this:
"where's the quad?" - "no quad lol, get b" - "kk"
....after that useful stuff like "2+ right" came from him, maybe some ♥♥♥♥ talk, but especially no dumb questions.

But here's the deal: he's a highly experienced FPS players, and many INS players aren't even that. Most INSmod veterans i see even have a hard time aiming properly, or as you stated playing for the round win - but that's a completely different story.

NWI stated that they work on some ranking / level system, which i actually welcome in this regard, cause it would mean we could actually create - "puppy protection servers" - which would solve this issue quite a lot. Maybe include general hints like "capture this, press x to do y". A new player can ofc always skip this if wanted.
They would get "owned" way less and might continue playing (important part!), and we wouldn't be so damn annoyed by people constantly asking dumb questions, and could actually focus on playing together. The latter ofc we can ignore, the first part not.

+1, i think this is needed (in todays times) for the final version of the game.

I agree with Dejanus and kamk. Plus NWI have a training mission map if u type in console: map training. This map when released will probably show newbies how to play when they first begin insurgency. The map looks pretty cool too!
While noob friendly servers would be a good idea, I think jihad's right... It's not their lack of ability that annoys some more experienced players, it's the fact that they have no intention on capturing an objective and instead worry about things like K/D ratio...

But honestly, the best way to learn is to play against good players. You will die ALOT, but you will adapt and learn to improve alot better this way.

Also, without a ranking system what will stop a good player from entering and killing everyone?

What would be a good idea is a tutorial mode, which shows you how to perform basic tasks and gives you a run down of different game modes.

I was going to start a new discussion but then i found this...I'm a rookie lol. Just started playing this game about 3 days ago. No one probly cares but I love this game. Its what Ive been looking for for a while. I dont play COD or BF for my own reasons I wont get into. I have been looking for a "rookie friendly" server to join...not really because I dont know what Im doing but because I understand(sometimes) the frustration that comes with playing with new players. I think, for me at least, it just takes a bit of getting used to. The way everything moves and operates takes a bit to click for me. A simple run through the keybinding section of options gives people a pretty good idea whats going on as far as the controls. Im not sure why people just jump into a game and start asking questions about how to talk or whatever. I know no one asked my opinion but here it is.
For games like this its hard to make everyone happy, and to be newbie, or rookie friendly because they just arent "friendly" games. And if you want to have training wheels you are in the wrong place. But at the same time you want the game to grow and gain popularity so you can play it for years to come...Im not sure how you do that, or how you balace the two things. For me the appeal of this game is that it is hard, and that its not "friendly", as far as the gameplay in concerned. The people I've run into so far in game have been nothing but friendly, or at least tolerant of my waywardness at times.
So I say as a rookie...this game is hard, get better by taking a pounding and learning the maps and following what other people do. And if all you care about is the best K/D ratio go somewhere else. Thanks for reading.
I think the main point of the OP is how well the "veterans" receive new players? As this game starts to get promoted and positive reviews more "newbies" will arrive. I have seen so many good games with great potential die because there is a general harsh tone towards new players. The best way to support this game, it's future development, and community growth is to welcome and encourage new players even if it means taking some time to take them under your wing. Not preaching here just speaking from experience....would hate to see this game (which is great) end up with a stigma of being only for hardcore and experienced players.

The original post was born of a specific incident. I won't name names, but a veteran player entered a game, played all of two rounds, and then loudly declared his entire team to be incompetent idiots and a waste of time, and left without so much as a word of advice. Behavior like that, while understandable, helps no one.
In firefight, I think new players find that when they die they may never respawn and then conclude that they should always play overly cautious. Co-op is good but it teaches the simplistic idea that the enemy is always coming from a singular direction, among other bad habits

I feel like a jackass suggesting this but it'd be nice if there was a game mode that let players get a better understanding of how to shoot mans without pressure. Basically I'm asking for TDM. IS1 had tdm didn't it? Or, having more maps laid out for skirmish would help

Also: Limit 4x optics, especially on urban maps. Players feel they need the 4x and the game should tell them no, no you don't. You'll almost never see anyone with the 4x do anything other than flail and die in CQC, which is 99% of the game

One day away from release, there should definitely be servers listed as NOOBS ONLY or TRAINING SERVER. There will be lots of new guys and they will probably look fir a noob server first... There better be a few!
