I've got a different USB headset, but I get a similar problem: every time I unplug the headset, the system defaults to the onboard sound as it should, but when I plug the headset back in it doesn't always default back to the headset (stupid crummy drivers which spoil an otherwise perfectly good headset).
I just tried what you said to try clicking on different rec. devices in my speaker menu and that doesn't seem to be working.. Tested all of them through Insurgency and noone heard me. I'm running out of ideas
Also check the output volume in the device properties (sounds daft but it's an easy one to overlook).
Are you seeing something like this in your 'Windows' Sound...it's that little icon on the bottom right portion of your screen and it looks like a speaker pointing to the right.

Check to see what type of sound your 'card' produces.....likely it's 5.1 or 7.1
Where I ran into the same type of frustrating trouble is that the headset running the applied software that came with it.....wanted to run everything through my onboard realtek 5.1 sound at 7.1 and it really caused me headaches and frustration. I only use the sound setup for windows and not anything else. Perhaps, this is part of the problem. When it comes to add on sound cards, I don't know nuthin about them.
The only other thing I can think of is (pls pardon me, I know you ain't stupid) that perhaps you have unknowingly switched the sound off using a control on your headset?
Hey Pudfark,
I do see the line in and the stereo mix options. But I also see 3 of the microphone options. So what I have been doing is switching back and forth through those and settled on 1 that says "Sound blaster" which is enabled. But, all that really accomplished was now I can use my headset and turn off my speakers or vice a versa.
The 5.1 or 7.1 I have to look into. I only have Logitech with a sub woofer and 2 speakers.
I will try this option (5.1 or 7.1) and post and update a.s.a.p.
As far as turning off the controls via headset I checked that...was the 1st thing I checked B4 coming to the community.. I have been fiddling around with the 5.1 and 7.1... still nothing positive.
Make sure your mike is selected and enabled correctly through your windows OS settings.
Then make sure the sensitivities for it are also set correctly. My mike problem was (unknown why) sesitivity was set a zero. How this happened? I don't know, but the fix was to increase the sensitivity :)
However, the microphone is the FIRST thing that fails on a headset.
I did not read all the suggestions but make certain the mic works in windows, then Steam then INS - one step at a time.
SO!!! Overall I only have the audio working right now and can't get anything else. The newer macs have a audio/microphone input and I can only get the audio to work. I was late to my classes because of this garbage. Not happy and thinking I want to ship this thing back to amazon. Would someone PLEASE help me.
P.S. ( yes this is a letter now ) I was thinking of buying an audio/microphone USB drive to fix this. But REALLY dont want to throw more money at this problem.
FINALLY, I got my headphones to work with a mic. However, not the mic on my headset, I use a BLUE stand up mic (snowball will work too) this is a simple usb plug in and a bit of retweaking with my sound card it works and it works fantastic.
The only draw back is that the mic was near $100 canadian bucks at Best buy.
Hope this helps your sanity.
