And yes, there are benefits to having no special ammo type chosen, whether it be tracer, HP or AP.
With no special ammo selected, your bullets will not have tracers and they will be reasonably effective in all situations rather than specializing in one and sucking in the other.
Outside of that, the supply that you might have spent on ammo could be used for other, potentially more useful pieces of equipment like that upgrade that lets you carry multiple explosives or a suppressor, which is very desirable for obvious reasons.
Referring back to OP, chest is the part you aim for naturally, and AP penetrates props better, so AP is better situationally in almost every way
