AP vs HP rounds
So which round is better and how does each one work? Is one automatically better than the other or is one only effective against armor and the other only effective against non-armor or how? And by effective I mean more damage. Any reason to not take one of them?

HP does more damage to the arms and legs, that's the only thing it does better. If you want to get lucky spray OHK's with an SMG, hp is decent. That's about the only thing it's good for though. AP is better in pretty much every situation.

  • Hollow-Point (HP) [cost 4 (sec) 3 (ins)]: Does more damage to unarmored areas (limbs are usually 1 hit kills). Penetrates objects (such as wooden boxes) less effectively. Does less damage against armored areas.

  • Armor Piercing (AP) [cost 3 (sec) 2 (ins)]: Increases damage to armored areas. Does slightly less damage to unarmored areas. Penetrates objects (such as wooden boxes) more effectively.

If you're interested, you can find my response on a very similar question here:

And yes, there are benefits to having no special ammo type chosen, whether it be tracer, HP or AP.
With no special ammo selected, your bullets will not have tracers and they will be reasonably effective in all situations rather than specializing in one and sucking in the other.

Outside of that, the supply that you might have spent on ammo could be used for other, potentially more useful pieces of equipment like that upgrade that lets you carry multiple explosives or a suppressor, which is very desirable for obvious reasons.

Don't pick hollow points.

Hollow points are better in almost every situation. The helmet does not count as armor and you're far more likely to hit an arm, leg, groin or any other unprotected area than you are center mass chest. Anywhere except in the chest HP or ball rounds will do more damage (not including the head as it's a 1 shot kill no matter what ammo type you have equipped).

When I was testing weapon damage I found it actually really hard to get arm shots in most situations, the one exception being lateral movement. It's a crapshoot between dealing next no damage and a random 1hk, it's awful. HP is for shooting legs. You don't aim for legs.

Please don't feed the trolls.
Referring back to OP, chest is the part you aim for naturally, and AP penetrates props better, so AP is better situationally in almost every way
