Old Skool Review! - Considering Insurgency? Read This For More Info.
So Insurgency just officially launched and is no longer in Early Access so it's time for the review! I have to say It is by far one of the most fun games I have played in a long time. It is a solid mix of Counter-Strike:GO and Red Orchestra 2/Rising Sun. It's not nearly as faced paced or actiony as CoD or CS:GO but also not as slow and tactical as RO2 or ARMA. It is a really nice middle ground between Action and Extreme Realism with just enough of both in my opinion. Tactics and completing objectives win the day while getting kills takes a back seat in priority. This may be a reason some people do not like the game as much as a Counter-Strike, CoD or BF. Kills are generally the least important part of the game and you can be highly useful to your team even if you aren't a great twitch shooter FPS veteran.

The game rewards team work, tactics and working toward objectives. Some game modes do encourage a bit of camping as they are "attackers Vs. defenders" type of game modes but every round generally has a timer limit of 5 minutes or less and your teammates that are still alive can complete objectives to respawn their entire team again. Thus I really don't see an issue with campers or camping at all in this game. The game does support controllers but I obviously would highly recommend keyboard+mouse for any FPS, especially this one as there are advanced controls such as prone, lean, weapon fire rate, etc. that are very important and a controller would not have enough buttons to map all of those functions.

The graphics are solid, the weapons all feel very weighty and the sound effects and visual effects are superb! Getting shot at in this game is an experience in itself with debris and dust being kicked up every where in your face as well as sparks flying off metal surfaces. There is surface pentration as well so it is possible to shoot people through a variety of surfaces with the right weapons. Supressing fire is actually a viable tactic and strongly encouraged to pin enemies down. Kills occur in 1-2 direct hits from just about any gun and you only get one life unless your team can complete an objective to force a respawn. So caution, teamwork, tactics and patience are what matters most.

The game offers a wide variety of PVP game modes for up to 32 players and also a very satisfying COOP mode in which up to 6 teammates can work together to complete progressive objectives through a map against a horde of AI bots. You get to choose a class and squad and kit out your character with your choice of guns, attachments, grenades, armor and accessories depending on the class you choose. Which leads to a wide variety of ways to play the game to satisfy each person's preferences. There is already a good selection of maps for both PVP and COOP game modes and the devs have a bunch more lined up to be added at later dates. The maps feel well planned out and are non-linear, offering multiple paths to follow and take to objectives. Maps feature both wide open areas and tight streets and alley ways for close quarters combat with tons of cover and flanking options.

The devs have shown that they are very good at keeping to their planned direction for the game and constantly make new additions and updates to the game. They have a very exciting list of features planned to add to the game including new weapons, maps, character models, gameplay mechanics, additional achievements and much more. As far as I have read the majority if not all of that future content is to be relased free to everyone who owns the game. It has the full blown classic Server Browser that you are used to in all Valve FPS games and also has what seems to be a very solid Matchmaking system with good 1st party and 3rd party servers. The community is very healthy and has tons of players so you will not have any difficulty hopping right into matches at anytime of day. I have not experienced a single game crash or game breaking bug and the gameplay feels very balanced.

I really can't say enough good things about this game. It's an Indie Tactical FPS that rivals and beats almost any other AAA equivalent in the genre for a measly $15 bucks. I HIGHLY recommend this game and think it is well worth the $15 asking price (currently $13.50 launch price at time of writing this). So stop reading and get to it if you enjoy Tactical/Action FPS!

I agree! I've been having a blast all day, the only thing I'm not liking is some of the players. The ones who insist on spamming Allāhu Akba in VOIP (even on the Security) or just spamming nonsensical gibberish. It's getting increasingly frustrating... I would mute them but once in awhile they actually say something useful.

Also a question to the DEVS:
What is the feasibility that we will see third person weapon models that are representative of the attachments a player has equipped in future? And similarly the player models showing the level of armour and webbing a player has equipped? Both may already be present but it doesn't appear so to me.

All in all a solid game, I'm having as much fun as I was when the mod first released, it's probably better than the mod. (I stopped playing the mod not long after the first release as the patches were taking things the wrong way for my taste from what I remember)
