"(PS I uninstalled AVG after the second time but it's still poping up.)" obviously NOT
and btw the AVG/Avast is known problem, next time i suggest trying search function on this forum (simple word "AVG" and i see plenty of threads), you can avoid such an issue :)
Worst advice ever.
Your OS isn't exactly impenetrable from even the most basic spyware/malware/trojans/etc. Having no AV at all is just asking for something to go wrong whether it's tomorrow or years from now. Every day new viruses are being written to bypass security and f*ck your ♥♥♥♥ up. For example, a popular program I downloaded a few months ago from the developers site came packaged with a lot of crap I told it not to install. Despite it's reputation, not having an AV would have screwed me over. I actually know what I'm talking about as I have two years 2 years of Computer Systems Tech and 1 year programming under my belt as opposed to pulling info out of my a$$. No offense.
... and I have a degree in computing science and have been in the industry 15 years, you are not very experienced. Obviously you dont know enough to know that 'IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING' you dont need AV software which tells me .... you dont know what you are doing. You just made yourself look like a fool.
I havent had AV software in 8 years and have never had a hiccup.
Know how to surf the net properly, know what you are downloading, keep windows updated, stay behind a firewall and run some simple extensions like Adblock Pro, Ghostery and HTTPS Everywhere and you will be fine.
Arc knows more then you and probably isnt even in the industry.
You have a CST Diploma, a diploma people can earn out of their home in distance learning. I wouldnt be going around bragging and giving people information with such a low level of education.
Obviously, I'm speaking in terms of people who don't really know the things you have listed such as Adblock, being able to remove viruses by themself, HTTPS, etc, etc. I'm not very experienced, no. And I'm not bragging. But I know the fundamentals enough such as basic security to be able to speak on them. It doesn't take long to learn most of what needs to be known regarding modern networking, software, hardware, and security. Technology has changed alot over the years and not everyone is able to keep up with how to troubleshoot common issues such as realizing what is and isn't a virus.
Almost everything from DOS to Windows 8 can be crammed in a [large] text book and memorized if someone put the time into it. So it's doesn't necessarily take over a decade of experience to know a thing or two about computers. I know 20-something year olds who are just as smart as the veteran geeks but were only using a computer for maybe a few years. Things get obsolete real fast so just because you know everything about a floppy disc or MCH on a mobo doesn't really matter much unless you're in IT. You just have to know enough about the technology you constantly deal with to be knowledgable about it. Anyone can survive without an AV and be fine, but depending on the type of tasks someone has to do online it can be detrimental. Such as when someone is dealing with torrents. You personally don't need an AV because you know what you're doing and how to fix it when something goes wrong. Especially if you don't do much on your computer aside from research and playing the occasional game on Steam. But an 11 year old reading this topic sees your first comment and thinks he doesn't need an AV, just might take that advice and will be setting himself up for problems in the future. So it's more of a if and when situation. The topic itself is debatable, but that's just my take on it.
Also, just because you agree on the other guys' point doesn't mean he's smarter. That's just false and immature to say, especially since he doesn't know simple grammar. If I agree with What'sHisName about a certain topic as opposed to someone who is against it, that doesn't mean What'sHisName is smarter than the opposition. Everything I learned came from someone who has their own computer business with 15+ years of experience in the field, then I'll use internet sources every now and then to go back on:
