insurgency fails to launch (linux)

about 2-3 days ago Insurgency stopped working - fails to launch - "preparing to launch Insurgency" - and then nothing. Appears to be some type of update issue because this has always worked up until a few days ago. I'm using Linux Mint 19 + Steam

Perhaps your game is just crashing due it being too much work for your computer. Go to properties - launch options - and in the console, type in the command that will on start, make the game boot up in a lower resolution, so that it isn't so intensive on your computer. I had an issue like that on CSGO, so I just did that, and then full screened once the game was running, and it worked all right with me.

Maybe use ubuntu or something more common? Developing for linux with an engine like source, is a big consideration, and even then you have to take care of the different distros, even more of a pain, and for what? 0.4% marketshare? I don't really blame the devs. I'd say run windows on the side or ubuntu.

I changed my OS recently from ubuntu to mint, and i faced the same problem when trying to launch the game. its not like it is impossible to develop source engine compatibility for linux since i can run almost all source games from my library natively (with the expception of Black Mesa that faces the same problem as insurgency when i try to launch the game). Also, the marketshare in linux is much higher than, said, 0,4% and developers should invest their time to support distros since much gamers depend on this to play, for much people (including myself) it is not worth to use windows just to play games, because of the fact that we use Linux to everything we need and, besides the compatibility issue that we face everyday, Linux is better than Windows in Inumerous ways.

So please never tell a Linux user to migrate to Windows

As a game dev myself, if unity wouldn't provide out-of-the-box support for linux, it would be unwise to develop for a 0,4 marketshare, which is divided into more distros, each with their own issues. Now if you don't want to install Windows, fine, but don't expect perfect linux support.

It is required to delete every libstdc++* and libgcc* file from both ~/.steam/ and the game directory (for Insurgency in my case ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/insurgency2/)

The easiest way to do this is:

Go into the desired folder and run find | grep libstdc++ and find | grep libgcc to check whether the files are existing.

If any files are listed you need to delete them. Fastest way through rm $(find | grep libstdc++) and rm $(find | grep libgcc)

It worked for me. If it doesn't work for you leave a message and the community may help you.

NOTE: This fix must be redone every time Steam gets an update
The reason for this is:

Steam is supplying outdated files, which in most cases are not even required because those are coming shipped updated with the operating system itself. Some of Steams libraries are incompatible with the recent Mesa versions.
With the fix we're forcing Steam to use the updated files supplied by the operating system and not its own ones.

The problem is Steam itself, it has nothing to do with Linux or the distros. It is pretty simple. Develop for Ubuntu LTS libraries and that solves right there as a Linux gamer is usually going to have more up to date libraries than either Ubuntu LTS or Windows.

The real problem is that SteamOS is based on Debian, Debian is not the problem and this is base is a good thing, and then ships the client with a LTS base from 2012. Purely a Valve problem that they for some odd reason not have fixed. Solus, now Debian, and others either automatically delete this outdated libraries for you or default the client to use native libraries by script.

So ignorant Windows users who go full ♥♥♥♥♥♥ by suggesting Linux users swtich to an inferior slave operating system: we do not care what your uneducated and ignorant ass thinks. The fact you use Windows and suggest a full ♥♥♥♥♥♥ solution as swtiching to Windows shows your opinion means ♥♥♥♥, except to, maybe, you.

Sure, stay ignorant to the facts that we just revealed to you... A good game developer aways gives attention to as much support it's game needs, and so, you doesn't seem like a good developer anyway. The community of Linux gamers keep growing everyday, and the need for direct support coming from developers is growing as well, so developers who don't support Linux are just losing market.
