Heavy armor have more protection than light armor and heavier.
Remember they are chest armor. They only protect your body but not your limbs or your head.
So if you get shot in your limb then it obvious you will die even if you have heavy armor. Limbs have no protection from light and heavy armor.

Heavy armor absorbs explosived really well and you can take a few ap in the chest, depending on the weapon type. With light or no armor you will die to grenades even from medium distance and if the enemy has ap you get oneshotted no matter what

This, there other factors but arguably the defining difference between Heavy and no/light armor is you [may] survive RPG/explosive vs. being KIA without.

In coop Heavy armor is probably better do to bot RPG spam.

In pvp what is better is more a matter of play style, side, game mode and map.

Heavy armour is the best for resisting explosives, hp rounds, regular rounds, and even ap rounds depending on the weapon. Light armour is weaker, one ap round to the chest can kill you with any standard primary weapon, explosives are much more... dangerous, plus the light armour model sucks ass. Only use light armour if you plan on being heavy, but dont have enough points to pay for heavy armour. Better to have somthing than nothing. Keep in mind that heavy armour reduces 80% damage at max, but light armour only 60%.

Light armor if your enemy is extremely brave by using low caliber HP rounds to shoot your chest.

Light armor will only save you from pistol caliber rounds, wallbangs, HP, very distant shots from a rifle, and far away explosions. In a direct gunfight with other rifles, you will likely experience no difference between light and no armor. AP rounds will do more damage against light armor than no armor (Though in many cases, you won't be able to tell the difference since rifle damage is already so high).

Personally, I either run no armor or heavy armor. Heavy armor reduces damage from everything, even AP rounds. It has a far more noticeable effect against everything else as well.

Keep in mind, the armor hitbox is 1:1 with your character model. It only protects the upper body, so even with heavy armor, you can still get one shotted from HP rouds to the limb, headshots, etc.
