+ I for some reason started using the ump before the mp5 so its got a special place in my heart.
UMP is better for mid and longer distances than MP5 - but kick more, lower cadence, but smaller recoil and has a little bit higher damage...
For me for example it is like - Station map - MP5 ..... Contact - UMP.... Both weapons are great, still AKM and M14 EBR rullez most for me... ;-) still, when you got MP5 or UMP with silencer, enemy almost cant locate your position via weapon sound (only when he is really near)...
Also, another thing with the silencer is that it reduces muzzle flash to nearly 0, so not only can the enmy not hear you, but also can't see you.

Anyways, to answer the question in general; I much prefer the UMP-45 for stopping power. It's accurate and powerful, while the MP5 is mainly for CQC and flanking. I use both quite often, and it really depends on the job.
