How to create a private co-op match with buddy?
I thought there'd be a way to create and password -protect a game, like you'd do in killing floor or raindbow six, but all I see is servers with up to 32 player slots and no way to set up my own game.
This bugs me because I'd hate to jump on an empty game with my friend and later on having people walk in and out of it.

if you don't want to make a dedicated server, you can set up a listen server with the console by just typing in "map mapname", like "map siege_coop". Mess around google and the source dev wiki for more console commands.

It should be quite easy! Haven't set any server up myself yet, so can't say for sure how to though.

Seriously, by console command? And there's no pointer anywhere to instructions or anything?
This day and age you have to bring up the console and learn the commands?

To be honest, its not different from the little "host server" button. I know its an inconvenience to have to type it into the console but you'd get the same benefit from just plugging into the console. Not to mention it auto-fills generic commands and stuff.

Theres lots of instructions under the "Guides" section on how to host a dedicated server, but personally for coop between me and a buddy, just typing in "map siege_coop" "sv_lan 0" and then having them connect via hamachi or something works wonders. The game will just use all the default settings and cycle the default maps.

Well it's console commands or you setup your own server, unfortunately. If you decide to do the later, I have created a 16 step by step tutorial on how to setup your own server, using an old pc. A Intel dual-core or AMD Athlon x2 with 4GB of RAM should do the trick. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=221623461#

Well.. thanks for the heads up - what about without Hamachi, (it has a habit of messing up my adapter settings) - can I just connect via IP?

It should totally work if you've forwarded your source ports, and use the right console commands!

This is a great guide that walks you through it.

Thanks CyberCam.
I'm thinking that it looks way too demanding for an essentially co-op game. I need a PhD to just run this thing and try it out with a buddy?
Download this and do that and make a text file and drop it in X, also make a .bat -file for these commands - yyyyyyeaaah.

No problem. If you find that too difficult, there is a very simple way to create a dedicated server. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=210666387#224651 This way requires you to install the Steam client on the server and use the Server Tools in Steam. You can't get much simpler than that!

Sorry to wake this old thread, but what the hell?

Why is it so difficult to set up a game with a friend vs bots? Seriously, either the game is still missing this or the menu UI is terrible. It is extremely messy looking so I assume I'm just missing the simple set up for this.

Open console, type sv_lan 0, hit enter, type map mapname gamemode, hit enter, tell your friend to connect. Obviously you have to forward necessary ports if you are behind NAT (and that is required for any game).

Though, Main Menu UI is work in progress, there is a plan to make Solo / Listenserver play much easier in the future.

Also, there are newer discussions about Listenserver. Locking this one due to necro.
