Hosting an Insurgency Server
I was looking into hosting an Insurgency Server for my friends and I. I found a *link* to set up SteamCMD and install a server hosting function by typing in commands.

Followed it through and it all worked fine until I got to the command

steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir "c:\ins-ds\" +app_update 237410 +quit

which did not work as a line of code on SteamCMD. Should I have been working in Windows CMD to input that command or should I have just made a text document to run it?

I manually launched SteamCMD and inputted the commands, which worked individually but not batched together as above.

Then from SteamCMD I tried the command

srcds.exe

which SteamCMD did not understand.

I opened the file location on disk and found I could launch it through windows where it proceeded to set up its server. However I doubt that it has actually set up a server that people can log onto.

I read that if you just launch it and open the console and load a map then that is the server started for people to join. I asked a friend to try connecting to me and open their console and use the connect command to connect using my ip address but they still couldn't. Looked at my router to open the port forwarding settings to create an entry for Insurgency, and they still failed to connect. Is there something I'm missing?

SteamCMD is merely a download tool, it doesn't do anything past that.

What is Insurgecy Mod Dedicated Server? Is that a server dedicated to hosting particular mod or uploading mods?

Also, if I were to get custom maps in a game would I have to integrate the map file and audio file into my ...Server/Insurgency/ folder?

The audio file tries to overwrite the original audio however I've just told them to use a audio(1).cfg file instead... I understand this might obfuscate the audio of the map, however I'd rather have the general audio file working rather than the modified, for now.

Mod server is a "Insurgency: Modern Infantry Combat" which is a mod this game is based on.

Usually you would see any map related audio compiled in the map file (BSP). Steam Workshop maps have its own directories and all should be fine. If you have maps from elsewhere you have to use "..\insurgency\custom" and "..\insurgency\maps" folder respectively.

Thank you muchly for your help!

A friend and I have managed to play a map on my server. I've managed to load a Workshop map onto the server and load into it myself so he should be able to join too, if he has the associated map file.

if you read the part of the guide about the subscribed file id the server will force players to download the right map when they try to connect :)
use linux vps + lgsm:happy_creep:

To be honest, everyday I'm tempted a little more to just switch fully to Ubuntu 16. Lot of games still prefer Windows.

Setting up and Insurgency server is quite a difficult process, You don't do anything in Steam Steam but rather a console version of steam, from your Windows cmd prompt or from a Linux Terminal or something.

That guide is heavily out of date.
