When prone, the mag blocks you from adapting a natural shooting stance, because you're so close to the ground. When shooting over cover, the cover can block your mag and make it hard to shoot over it.
In both cases you're forced to crane your body higher to clear the mag over the obstructions, giving you a less-stable shooting platform and making you a more exposed target to enemy detection and incoming fire.
The M16A1 was originally adopted with 20rd straight mags for these same reasons, though since the 5.56 thirty-rounders are much smaller than the 7.62 thirties, they were ultimately considered a reasonable compromise.
Someone mentioned how the FAL and the Mk.18 have the exact same stats as the AKM, they are both just re-skins. If that's true then it's not a lack of research, they could be placeholders for future balancing or dare I say it's just laziness. Need a dev to come in and clear this up, I don't feel like searching around for the posts I read about this on.
