why Finland is missing?
hey. I thought I download this (Wargame: Airland Battle) and I began to explore the game further. there was a nato, Swedish, Russian America bitannia and so forth. but I could not find after searching for land in Finland. This initially surprised, because Finland is located in Russian, Swedish and Norwegian opposite. is that really the case, and if so, why? but the game looks really good :). thanks for the replies.

I think it's because it isn't in the NATO

Finland bides its time. Finland waits for the others to exhaust themselves in the fight. When all who stand in Finland's way are reduced to ruin battling each other... FINLAND POUNCES!!

But yes, Finland does not belong to NATO. True fun fact.

Nor does Finland belong to the Warsaw Pact. There's a decent Wikipedia entry on that.

I looked around. Apparently the devs didn't add it because Finland's military was super-defensive rather than well-balanced, making it super-easy to hold down cities in demolition game modes but basically making its only capabilities to be defensive rather than well-rounded. I'm not familiar with Finnish military, of course, so it's not my opinion I'm spouting here, but one I read about in the forums.

They actually had the Finnish military in the game in early builds?
I think the better question is why Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Czechoslovakia are all in the game, but Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary are not.

Czechoslovakia is only in because it was in the previous game. Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary wouldn't be involved in Scandinavia but it would be great to see them added.

Sweden wasn't in NATO either (and still isn't). I don't think finland had enough units to make them a viable faction and if that isn't true, then i don't know why they are not in the game.

The reason Finland was not added is simple. They had a strict defensive posture and was aligned to PACT. Unlike Norway, Denmark, and Sweden (The latter being decidedly NATO friendly despite not being a NATO member) they did not face any credible threats of invasion. The likelyhood of norway and sweden posing a threat was nonexistant and The other NATO nations never had any major forces stationed there.

We had Charioteer and Comet tanks in our inventory till the 80's and most of finnish infantry would have been equipped with world war 2 era weaponry, like Suomi-KP and DP.

Well....,The Swedish Have Sisu APC,s. Thats a finnish unit. They should ad Finnish infantry with Rk 62 assault rifles.

I don't know where you get your information from, such as Finland being PACT-aligned, but Finland was trying very much to be west-aligned and in every way was closer to Sweden than Russia throughout the cold war.

Finland had, among other things, a secret reserve of Draken fighter jets in Sweden that would be brought to the theater in the case that Russia (again) attacked Finland.

One problem with Finland being in the game is that Finland had a combination of PACT and western weapons. An example is the above Swedish Saab Draken fighter alongside the Mig-21. And yes, the Finnish military was geared towards defence only so not very balanced for a game.

czechoslovaki was in the first game
having a game set in scandinavia with no scandinavian factions dont make sence
having factions that isnt importent, in or close to scandinavia and wasnt in the first game makes compleatly no sence

Finland could have gone PACT or NATO, it just depends on the situation.

They used equipment from both NATO and PACT at the time, and even made bastard child vehicles combing a British AAA system and a T-55 chassis.

:-) yes, I think you are basically right. Geopolitics is a difficult area to predict.

Sry to say this, but you are talking absolute bs. Just as Sweden, Finland was not aligned with either NATO nor the Pact. Also, like Sweden, Finland still leaned closer to NATO and the West, which is clear for anyone with a passing knowledge of geopolitical relationships during the Cold War. Since the Soviet Union was right next door, Finland had to do a delicate balance between not alienating Russia (due to the threat of another war as well as economic reasons) but still getting in bed with the West. Also, your statement that Norway and Sweden didn't pose a threat is simply delusional. Of course they didn't pose a threat since Finland has been closely allied with both nations since it's inception.

If all that was TL;DR, just remember this; Finland was not aligned with the Pact.
