Map editing and modding tools?
What a hidden gem of a game. By chance, are there any modding/editing tools? Maybe a plugin for Blender or something that would allow creating new units?

There also was a recent release this year, trying to replicate the old Wargame formula:

If you are looking more into a strategic FPS ARMA-style game, the currently 'hot game' is
"Total Conflict Resistance" - in development (Early Access), but you can play their Demo on Steam right now:

A beloved niche-title was Syrian Warfare:

If you are looking for another ARMA3-style very popular game, there is SQUAD:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/393380/Squad/

... focused on military tactical gameplay - but in a FPS format ... where we leave the field of 'RTS' and are more in the "Battlefield" and "CoD" end of things.

Outside this, a 'modern day RTS-type wargame' depends highly on your personal taste/preference.

I find CMANO the most realistic, up-to-date, 'what-if' current war simulator.

But this is not a 'game' game, more a database Excel spreadsheet mimicking a serious simulation.

You might have luck browsing Steam Search while using sub-category filters (RTS+Military+Wargame") and sort by 'reviews' to see what is most popular?

Oh, and there's always ModDB and total-conversion mods, but that takes also time to filter and browse for the kind of game you are looking for.

Sadly, no.

The French publisher/dev-studio is strictly against 'modding', which is a shame, since modding is a major part of RTS games and gives them longevity and new life ... unless you do not like that. They don't.

There were a few attempts in the early years, but nothing 'working' to my knowledge.

Ah, that is a shame - incredible game for its time that is still very fun to play. What would you recommend as a modern equivalent?

I did also purchase WG:Red Dragon, but that too is a few years old. It would be great to have something with the graphic fidelity of something like ArmA 3 with the RTS elements of this game.

Eugen System has a focus on PvP Multiplayer. Modding would unbalance the game. It was never intended to be a single player game.

While I understand that some would liek to mod everything your could imagine that modding would make the game open for exploits.

Ahmm ... sorry, but that cannot stand as an argument. That's why you have 'game-modes' in RTS games.

StarCraft2, Dota2, CnC, CoH, DoW, ... all have mods and are still played competitively. Even as Esport for millions of dollars. Something Eugen would love to have - but again - fail the vision for it ... imho.

Perhaps i can see some logic but then again, I was seeing this from a sort of offline sandbox perspective - a way to recreate real life battles/scenarios. I think, respectfully, that it was a bit short sighted by Eugen - maybe they saw mods as competing with DLC?

These are GREAT alternatives - thank you! I'd been keeping an eye on Warno, but its early access which i tend to shy away from (as a former indie dev, I always saw early access as: "we're struggling in some way and need some cash/attention now", which can be a bad sign. Maybe that is unfounded though.

All DLC's where free with exception of Red Dragon DLC's. It wasnt that. Eugen System actually tried to create a Niche in RTS with pure PvP based RTS which started before with RUSE. THe Trailer for RUSE explains pretty much what they tried.
the most wicket problem was they had not enough resources, manpower etc to do it "well". and in their way they make the game, it would mean much more effort than editors you would know from the 90's games.

and I think games can be smaller, but have 1000x more features and muuuch longer series to watch the story they told... (his story... they promised) at the beginning was the word. so it was the thing promised already in the bible) hahaha

all in all, just hope for the germans instead;)

darn if they would need my help isnt it??
