hi Twinsen.
1) This game has a grind. The PvE is very very basic and so it can be quite boring to do. It takes about 8 hours questing to get to lvl 25, after which I make a personal choice to go grind and fight in the warzone. Although at lvl 25 u can't do much damage to lvl 60s, I find my stuns and freezes still work so I can contribute to war. So basically I grind and wait for war to happen (fort/bridge fights happen about 1x every 20 mins) and then go join the war. This way I dont find it that boring (also by war, it includes enemies coming to hunt me). After lvl 25, it takes about 3 weeks to get to level 50 (3-4 hours a day). Many players coast at level 50+ because you already have most of your abilities and are very effective in wz. Since PK provides xp, you could level up slowly to 60 by war. Lvl 50-60 takes ages (a few months).
2) Overall the reason why I pick Regnum over other mmos is that I find it a well balanced RvR game. So if I grind for 6 months, I can play that toon for years. So I find many veteran players have done the same. Many players hav ebeen with the game for years. Regnum and Aika are the only 2 official f2p RvR open PvP games in the market. That's right. Only 2. I dont like Aika so I picked Regnum. Other RvR games include DAOC Uthgard which is f2p but not official, and GW2 which is buy to play.
3) Is it worth playing? Yes if u like RvR. Possibly the best RvR in the industry. It's not perfect tho. there is constant debate on how to improve pvp/rvr balance, and ngd tries to listen and keep improving the game over time.
edit: Laetitian, another steam user, described Regnum's pvp this way: "In Regnum, how well the group plays, concerning charging-tactics and group-positioning, decides whether or not you are going to get past a majority of enemies, or not! And, also in Regnum, how well you know your class determines whether or not you will be a part of your group's success."

This is a good description of why Regnum is a superior mmo in RvR.
4) is it pay to win? Well the cash shop sells lucky boxes which have a chance of dropping an uber item. But the chance is so small it is a lottery. And ngd tries to make sure the uber items are balanced by one or 2 big negative characteristics (like if it is a bonus armour boost, it may have a weakness to one type of damage). The other thing the cash shop sells are xp boost scrolls, which I dont find makes a game pay to win. There are some players with uber items and who are hard ti kill. But not too many. ngd has to always be vigilant about becoming pay to win, and i think they continue to try hard.
5) Do you need cash to enjoy the game? Well, the only way to get a permanent mount is to buy it via the cash shop. It costs about USD 5. It is also possible to get a free mount by doing free surveys if you register via gamesamba, but this can take a few weeks (maybe 6 surveys). Every new character gets a 1 week free mount. Some players do without a mount for some time or even for the entire game. It just means that the pace of the game is slower and u have to plan you respawn points to maximise travel. Mounts help u get to each fight faster. (i did without a mount for months for my characters). u dont need to buy anything else to enjoy the game.
feel free to ask questions!
Rift feels like WoW and GW2 had a baby...which isn't a bad thing. It has armor looting(whoring) like in WoW but it has world events like in GW2.
I suggest gw2.
great graphics
great sound and music
great half action kinda gameplay
epic strategic worldvworld stuff
and tons of other random stuff which is kinda hard to explain
i can answer this post with 1 word: no.
personally i dont regard paying to skip grinding as pay to win.
i regard pay to win as being able to pay for an unbeatable advantage vs another character of the same level.
if people want to pay to skip grinding then that is fine for me because it is a donation to the game. the grind is deliberately made longer to try to encourage donations.
drop rate - the drops are kept very minimal. actually items are not usually the primary determinant of victory in pvp. skill use is. it is true that some players have collected very strong items but there is always some degree of edge in trying to make the game financially viable. overall, I dont find the existence of high power items to be too disadvantageous, but it is something ngd always has to keep an eyey on.
i suspect many mmo players are used to the relatively faster grinds of Rift and Tera and maybe even Warhammer online. I suspect Regnum is going to be around longer than either Rift or Tera. Regnum already beat Warhammer. So the key when thinking about the grind is--- how long will you be able to enjoy the character? If the game closes down like warhammer then ur grinding is wasted.
I do.
