Max mode combos range from simple to difficult depending on the character. To activate in a combo, you press Light Kick+Strong Punch before the animation in your normal finishes, then proceed to go into normals->looped combo of specials before ending in a super.
Check out this playlist for combos for all the characters in the game. Parts 1-3 are for basic combos (there are some easy max mode combos) and 4-5 are for advanced combos.

He can't actually. f+A is not special cancelable in 2k2 like it is in 98 and 13.

The book is written for Street Fighter 2 because every other game in the genre is based on it, and KOF 98/2002/13 all follow most of the rules in the book. The vibe is a bit different, though, so using this video as a companion to the shoryuken guide is recommended:
