Here's the fix for controller support
Go to your steam library, right click the game, select properties.
Go to "Controller" and select "Disable Steam Input" in the drop down menu.

Voila, your game will now detect your controller.
This is an issue Ubisoft could easily have prevented, but for now, you must do it like this.

Enjoy!

How much is it Ubisoft, and how much is it just Steam being weird?

This is Ubisoft being completely incompetent, same reason there is no Achievements

quite the opposite, this has native controller support, that's why you should disable steam input for it
I just pulled out and plugged the gamepad wire into the usb port (my dualsense gamepad) with the game open and the game saw it

my setting have always been like this.
it fixes 100% of the issues people have with controller support in recent games.
If a game has native xbox pad support (like this game, and 90% of modern releases)
than you dont need that steam api confusing things. Turn it off by default.

tried that just disables controller completely

Why on pc do you want to use console controllers, it boggles the mind..

You should ALWAYS leave every single checkbox for Steam controller support unchecked unless a game requires it (like No Man Sky). Steam controller support often conflicts with a game native controller support.
Go to Steam > Settings > General Controller Settings and uncheck everything.

Because controllers were designed to play games and it excels far better than random office gear designed to type stuff and navigate trough your OS.

Right! I never understood this psuedo - puritan attitude some pc gamers have about using a controller, esp. if the game was designed for a controller!
I mean, how small must your mind be to be 'boggled' by such a simple concept?

I was hoping SEGA would also understand this concept, but reversed. Now controller users experience what keyboard and mouse players feel when SEGA releases their Yakuza games with no proper keyboard and mouse support.

If you are a controller elite on one of those forums belittling people who wanted keyboard and mouse support. Then you probably deserve this.

But to everyone who loves using a controller and properly can't then we can feel your pain and it is not acceptable.

i didnt had to do this at all, all you ppls did which run into trouble like this is because you peoples playing in the past around with these settings and now you get issues with certain games. just stop fooling around with the steam settings.
