Exotic items are random drops throughout the game, which you can gain from just killing NPCs in the world, running your missions etc.

When you get to level 40 and start gaining SHD levels (for your watch, if you have the Warlords expansion), you can then do things like Countdown, where you can earn currency from doing them to buy Exotic crates or a chance of exotics dropping there as well.

Plus when events/seasons content is active you can level up your seasonal level, which can also provide you with an exotic crate through that leveling process.
If you have Warlords of New York, don't get attached to any gear or weapons until you're Level 40. Everything under Level 40 will become obsolete.

You're guaranteed an Exotic Cache reward once a week by completing the Weekly SHD Requisition Project by donating enough materials.

No, you can but it's going to be Level 30. When you get your gear to Level 40, anything below that is going to be under leveled and just taking up space.

There is no method to convert Level 30 gear to Level 40. (Level 30 and Level 40 gear even has separate Optimization and Recalibration Libraries).

You will only become eligible for Exotic Caches from sources such as Seasons which offer content such as Manhunts and Leagues as well as the new mode Countdown once you are Level 40.

basically, once the story is finished you do the same stuff over and over and over again like all games like this now-a-days.

The Seasonal system is beginning to force you to do higher difficulty content, when it shouldn't....it ruins the fun.

Doing higher difficulty content is more challenge though and removes you from the boredom of running through the game without a care in the world.

Especially if you run Heroic with all modifies turned on, a lot more interesting.

With the exception of Exotics. You can buy blueprints from Inaya at the Base of Operations to upgrade level 30 exotics to level 40[imgur.com].

Replying to your comment is going off-topic but I'm not sure I follow how the Season system is forcing players to do higher difficulty content. I've played all of the Seasons. Manhunts are straightforward with a mixture of Control Points and Bounties (and lately Territory Control and a Rescue Operation which are quick and easy).

The final Manhunt objective this Season was actually clever in how they incorporated Countdown as a means to both showcase the new game mode and introduce it to players.

Leagues are not difficult if you can make the time limit at least 8 / 10. Three of the selected missions must be done at Hard difficulty with only one at Challenging. The remainder of points towards the Backpack Trophy can be made up for with the other objectives such as Killing Elites or Disrupting Enemies, which can be done at any difficulty. Apparel Events only require you to level up since you are rewarded one Apparel Event Cache Key every four SHD levels or they can be directly purchased with Premium Credits. That leaves the Global Events which have a set of specific objectives and also can be done at any Difficulty.

Personally, I am capable of doing everything almost always solo at Challenging difficulty, and that is how I have my Global Settings, but it's by no means a requirement nor do I feel forced.

Exotic drops have a red halo and a reddish background on them in your inventory. If those rifles had a red halo when you looted them and the reddish background in the inventory (or in your gear when equipped) then they are indeed exotic drops.

Oh Carol is not an Exotic, it's a High-End Marksman Rifle. That is a good example of how being only Level 30 wastes your time with most loot. Those two sniper rifles you have acquired will forever be stuck at the level you got them unless you were Level 40.

Exotic loot has a kind of copper tint to easily identify it. High-End loot is goldish orange and is named versions of Standard loot.
