They haven't clarified or followed up on their message. They said they have a goal to be able to "progress with out them" which isn't clear whether that means they are moving forward as a whole without seasonal characters or they are making it an option to be able to progress through the season on main characters while still introducing seasonal characters.
Regardless, seasonal wipes needs to happen, not a dumb idea in any sort. Game get's bland fast once you max out a build. Game loses purpose, goals and motive once you max out a build and hit level 1k.
Current nonseasonal model doesn't retain players and the daily low player count reflects that. Even after the game goes on sale, there's a small spike in player counter, they drops back off in about a week.
We don't know yet.
After their message regarding seasonal characters, we haven't gotten a follow up message or clarification.
Considering they have been working on Seasons 2.0 for over two years in which were designed around seasonal wipes, I do not see seasonal characters being completely removed from the game, but I do think they will make them optional.
Doesn't take a rocket science to understand that seasons works perfectly without forcing resets. In Special when its loot based with rng and many only manage to get thieir builds done at the end of the "season" aka "diablo 4 style" OH COOL I FOUND ALL THE GEAR AND SUCH, I'M READY...... OH WAIT ITS ONE WEEK TO END THE SEASON AND THEY WANT ME TO START ALL OVER AGAIN.
tldr: SEASONS + CURRENT CHARACTERS = WIN WIN
Look at the player count, it pretty obvious that the current seasonal model appeals to less people with every season. The Division 2 is a AAA game which can barely hold 2k daily players, the current seasonal model does not work perfectly and does not keep player engaged for that long. Then look at Tarkov, a 10 year old game still in E.A holds over 100k daily players. The player retention Tarkov has is merely because of regular wipes and the principles behind wipes that keeps player engaged. if Tarkov didn't have wipes, that game wouldn't even still exist today.
Whether or not you accept it, games that have regular wipes not only retain more players, but see players count increase at the start of every wipe because people actually like that early grind. The Division 2 get's bland as hell when you max out your build. Loot, materials, activities, missions, projects all lose value because players no longer need XP, materials, resources once they hit level 1k and max out their build.
People complain about the looting as if that's not the entire purpose of the game to begin with. It's a looter shooter where the looting dies out after you max out your character. Every game that has wipes has proven to be more successful with higher player count and higher player retention.
The only argument people have against wipes in The Division 2 is the shallow stance of "they don't want to do it again" but somehow doing the same seasonal content on the same maxed out build is somehow a better option. Ridiculous to argue the current seasonal model works when the average daily player count says otherwise. Then when you look at looter games that have regular wipes have a far higher and consistent player base. Devs need to do what's best for the game and not listen to people who speak purely out of emotion.
The Division 2 will continue to die out if they cancel seasonal characters out completely. As of now there's just over 1.6k players playing right now. That is absolutely pathetic for a AAA title. Wild to me how you can acknowledge that player count then say that seasons with our current characters is a win-win in the same breath. I think those against wipes are too shallow to comprehend how regular wipes would completely change the dynamic of the game for the better and benefit the game's long term health.
I think it's selfish to argue against seasonal wipes because you "don't want to grind again" but will most likely stop playing the game once you reach the point there's nothing left to grind.
