2. I wouldn't say one is better than the other, every specialization good it's own way. You get 3 points for leveling up and 5 points for completing black tusk invaded missions. (at least after new york)
3. you can't change anything on exotics, all your gear will be very low in new york, so l wouldn't worry about collecting something for an exotic.
I promise
1. If you want the full story and a bit more understanding of how to fight Black Tusk (robots, drones, etc), I would do the BT missions. Otherwise, there's no real reason to stick around.
2. The most commonly used specializations are Technician for skill builds and Gunner for weapon damage builds but really it depends on what you want to do.
3. Mods and attachments are fixed on exotics, they can't be changed. Unfortunately the Ruthless, which is an addon for getting the ultimate edition, is basically useless once you outlevel it.
