Depends. How much do you enjoy playing this game? Do you want endgame content? Do you see yourself playing this game in the next 2 years +? If not, then I'd suggest you move on and play something else. As much as I love the series. Many often come and go. So I understand and respect that.

This is so far off what OP was asking that I don't really know how to reply with a correction.

If the $3 difference isn't a problem then I'd say get the Ultimate edition. It just unlocks half the specializations for you (basically gives you quick access to different buffs that you would normally have to unlock), and add 8 "Classified Assignments" (missions) to the map. They can be used as fast travel points once discovered (convenient to have but not necessary).

Is it even worth playing though if they are releasing the new one for free this year?

That’s still wildly unhelpful, since you in no way engaged with the OP’s question. You answered what you felt the OP’s question should’ve been.

If anyone else is wondering the difference the ultimate edition it unlocks all the specialisations from the start.

if you really want it, buy it at ubisoft web when they have sale, usually dirt cheap then buy base game in steam, then connect your account to unlock all

Wait what? I'm in the same position as OP and wondering which should I get, but if they're releasing a free version then I might reconsider

isn't that one basically an extraction shooter and not actually a rpg game

For $9, there's no reason not to buy the NYC edition.

The NYC edition expands the game beyond it's initial storyline adding literally hundreds if not over 1,000+ hours of grind and repeatability.

I also have a question about the ultimate edition. Are the level boost and instant unlock forced or can they not be used? I would like to go through the game step by step and I don't want a high level right away.

lvl boost you can ignore if you want to.
as for the extra specializations i think they auto unlock at lvl 30 with the ultimate edtion but thats not to much of a big issue imo.

I would strongly recommend not to level boost for new players. Play through the base game.

I'm curious to know. I have the NY version on Uplay. What exactly are you getting in the Ultimate Edition? Is it worth while? Will the loot be significantly better?

I have been contemplating on getting the Ultimate Edition since it's cheap, but I'm hesitant to start over, or be concerned about the player base being nearly dead. Most clans in game are inactive.

I have always liked D2, and I'm likely the only one of a few to still play it with the constant invasions of factions and some content, but then it does get a bit repetitive.
But if the UE isn't rewarding with content, then I guess I know my answer.
