How is the snowdrop engine not used in more AAA games?
No matter what your opinion on the Division is as a game. the engine that powers it is so impressive, even today. The level of detail, the character physics it's such a step above and beyond something like Unreal Engine.

Imagine a game like that scam " The day before" being done by a competent dev in the D2 Snowdrop engine....damn

That engine is propietary so Massive-Ubisoft owns it.

You telling me that's a problem that money can't solve?

Ubisoft could indeed help their financial situation, if they were to sell the rights for x studio to use their engine for a contracted title.

Making a game is expensive per se. If you want to add an extra cost by renting an engine while you have Unreal... I dont know. It is not only about money... An engine is not the usual software but something quite more complex and it is usually tailored to fit the needs of the dev team. It is not something of general purpose but a specific one.

The idea of bulding an engine is to make something that allows you to work the way you want with the hardware you want to use. It is not that simple. I dont know how restrictive snowdrop engine is but I would not bet for it to be "plug-and-play".

Ruvvens is indeed correct. Snowdrop was indeed made with the developers in mind, so for them to indeed rent it like I mentioned, it would also require them to go through some form of training as well.

It's not always going to be a typical C++, Python or Lua for example.

But as Ruvvens's mentioned, there is Unreal Engine, which is free for developers to use and I imagine pretty easy to use, if a lot of studios and indie studios are using it. The same for Unity as well.

But I do like the Snowdrop engine.

The New Avatar game is using the Snowdrop Engine and as far as I'm aware it will be used for the Star Wars game that Massive are developing.

Yeah, Ubisoft is going all in with the star wars game. A No Man's Sky concept with the Star Wars franchise lore. It is a lot and in the light of recent, and not so recent, events I dont think they will deliver. But I do like nice surprises though.

But engeneering that is quite a deed. It is not only lasers but also lasers fired from spaceships :D

I am curious, not gonna lie, about Coruscant. Coding such a planet has to be a dream and also the very fabric of nightmares.
