A few questions
Just got the game so I’m really early into everything and trying to figure stuff out as I go. (survivor level 2 not too long ago).

As far as I can tell physical and magical are the two main types, and physical has both melee and ranged options but so far I’ve only seen ranged magic.

I was wondering is it worth to try and mix damage types or should you focus on either physical or magical? I noticed the early archer character, Tanith, has a bow physical primary and a magical water spirit secondary so I was wondering how to build him. I’ve just been focusing on either or on the characters that have the same damage types on their weapons so far.

Also should I be selling materials for gold? Doesnt look like you get much gold for each drop anyway so I’ve just been holding on to them.

The game wants you to try all weapons and find the best builds for what you want to achieve, which are mostly driven by the achievements. E.g. getting very high damage is usually via a physical dmg melee build. If you just want to unlock everything on a map, the fastest character with heavy armor is better suited to the job. Bosses that can 1-hit is usually vulnerable to ranged builds.
I suggest selling drops until you get the workshop where you will start unlocking crafting recipes. Gold is scarce when you start playing.
There's a pinned discussion "progression guide" that covers most of the basics.

When you Sell weapons and equipment - after you have sold them - can you find them again in Chests from the appropriate maps?

You always find the map-specific weapons during play, even if you didn't put them in your loadout. All equipment you sell in the Stash goes to the shop where you can buy them again. Marbles in the weapons turn to dust when you sell them.
