Stuck in Miss Knives' House

Hello sorry if I'm missing something obvious, but I have four out of the five items to escape Miss Knives' house and can't for the life of me figure out how to remove the black thing from the soup. . I'm fairly sure that's the last thing I need. If it is the last thing, how do I get it? And if it isn't, what is the last item? Thank you!

if you've already purified the knife (using it to draw blood from either yourself or sai) then you can use it to cut off the foot of the thing in the cauldron!

Mirror (from the painting lady's room): examine it.
Sketchbook (from the locked room in the library): get the three jars from the same room, fill them with water from the pool in the middle of the room, then use them on the three pure colour paintings in the corridor to create jars of paint (you can also do this in reverse order). and use a jar on the sketchbook.
Compress (from the bedroom): use it on the pool of water listed above.
Knife (from behind the painting with the eyes): Cut yourself, Sai, or the painting lady.

I gave the knife to the hands painting before using it on the cauldron and I'm not sure what to do now. I already saved over the latest save file. Is there a solution to this or am I just out of luck and stuck?

UPDATE: It must have been a glitch. I reloaded and all the items were back in my inventory and the next part even requires I have all the items, so they shouldn't have disappeared/removed from my inventory in the first place? Odd, but just happy it's solved by reloading!
