The demo plays at around 1 FPS, so is currently pretty unplayable.

sorry to hear you are having problems.
Could you let me know, which windows are open during 1 FPS dips? Or is it continously 1 FPS?
Would you be able to share your processor details?
I plan to work on performance at the final stages of the development, but 1 FPS sounds huge.

It's not with any specific window open. FPS fluctuates, rather than continuous 1 FPS.

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8565U CPU @ 1.80GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.0GHz
Memory: 16384MB RAM

8565U should have been working fine at its Turbo speed @4.5 GHz. Especially with the Demo, considering that Demo has a smaller map.
I'll be looking into what might have been the issue.

I started the second tutorial - "Navigation and Battle" - and it doesn't have FPS problem. So the FPS issue is with the first tutorial - "Production and Recruitment".

I played the second tutorial a second time and this time it had the FPS issue - variable down to 2 FPS.

Could you let me know if your laptop is plugged in during the game which you get low FPS? or is your power management is not set to Power Saver?

My laptop has had its battery removed, so I play with it plugged in. I don't have problems playing other games, so it seems unlikely to me that that would be an issue.

Thank you for the feedback. I have been testing point of failures. I must say I cannot pin point it yet, but it's possibly related to minimap, which I plan to rework to improve performance before release.

Sorry. I must have clarified better. Yes demo is removed for reasons, but you can play the playtest version. It is same as demo, plus more.

All you need to do is to go to https://store.steampowered.com/app/2219390/Imperial_Ambitions/
and click at "request access" for playtest version. It automatically accepts requests.

I installed it and didn't experience the FPS issue so far.
